According to the specs, the 7100 has 100 MHz component video bandwidth. What does that mean? Does it have to do with the switching? Is it fast enough to handle 1080i? Can you even do 1080i through component cables?

Yes, you can do 1080i through component cables. According to this page, 1080i requires 37 MHz bandwidth, so you should be fine. You could even do 1080p which obviously requires 74 MHz.
For computer signals, check out the Video Bandwidth Calculator. Note that 100 MHz is kind of low for hi-res computer video. It is enough to transfer 1024x768@85Hz or 1280x1024@50Hz.

by Shane MartinUp until the Zenith came out I wasn't too intrigued with the 1080i thru component options for a dvd player. I wasn't convinced either and I'm still not that it makes a big difference.
However I need a new progressive dvd player and I can't justify having more than 1 in the rack to the...-

by JPThis has been brought uo before, but is still a pet peeve of mine. Supposedly according to Rotel (via my serial number) I have the increased Mhz for passing component video. But if I run something through it (DVD-progressive or my XBox-progressive) the picture looks less sharp. And I mean really less...-

by mattburkI have been doing some research and I came accross this quote:
"The original bandwidth of the RSP 1066’s component video inputs is 10MHz. However more recent shipping models have upgraded this bandwidth to 200MHz to support HDTV bandwidth"
I thought according to this quote...-
