05/14/03 - Integra has introduced the THX Ultra2-certified DTC-9.4, a high performance 7.1-channel preamplifier/processor/tuner that provides control and processing capabilities comparable to the most advanced audio and video components on the market today. It features decoding of every major surround sound format currently in use, excellent connectivity with balanced XLR outputs for all channels, a CHAD touch-screen LCD remote, and Net-Tune Ethernet client capability which gives it the ability to playback digital music files over a home computer network.

The DTC-9.4 is the first multichannel preamplifier/processor to carry the Integra name, and carries a feature set worthy of a flagship A/V controller. An original design low-jitter clock circuit, dual 32-bit DSPs, and linear PCM 192 kHz/24-bit DACs deliver crystal clear audio performance. The unit decodes THX surround EX, DTS-ES, DTS-96/24, and even the new Dolby Headphone format. Dolby ProLogic II and DTS Neo:6 processing provide satisfying 5.1- and 6.1- channel sound from 2-channel sources.

Thanks to Integra's Net-Tune functionality, the processor is also capable of streaming MP3, WMA and WAV files from a home PC or the NAS-2.3 dedicated Net-Tune server, all via standard Ethernet connection. Up to 12 client-enabled devices can be used on a single network to establish a powerful and seamless distributed audio system.

On the video side, the DTC-9.4 is one of the few models available which features automatic upconversion of all video inputs to 480i component video, requiring only a single video connection to component video displays. The inclusion of 50 MHz HDTV-capable component video switching prevents the signal degradation that can occur with low-bandwidth systems, and a sophisticated 3-line digital comb filter is used in the conversion of composite to S-Video for superior signal quality.

The DTC-9.4 features a wide array of audio and video connections to accommodate all of the gear in a high-end home theater system. There are two composite video inputs and one output, six A/V inputs with composite and S-video connections, and three audio-only inputs. The three coaxial and five optical digital inputs, including one on the front panel, are fully assignable, and there are even two optical digital outputs. For connection to power amplifiers, there are 8 unbalanced coaxial pre-outs, and each channel also has a balanced XLR output for amplifiers so equipped, such as Integra's seven-channel DTA-9.4 "Pure Digital" amplifier.

There is also an audio/video output for a second Zone, which provides the ability to listen to the same or different source material in another room, using an additional power amplifier. An On-Screen display provides control of all settings as well as access to Net-Tune digital media playlists.

The included CHAD remote control is a fully customizable graphical touchscreen learning remote which allows consumers to replace all of the remotes for their A/V equipment with a single unit. CHAD can also be programmed to perform a series of up to 255 tasks across multiple components with the touch of a single button. It features 2 MB of internal memory, programmable macros and timers, and an RS-232 interface so it can be customized with a home PC.

The Integra DTC-9.4 will be available in May at a suggested retail price of $2,000.

    Integra DTA-9.4 Power Amp

Integra Introduces 7 x 120 Watt Digital Power Amplifier

05/14/03 - Integra has introduced the DTA-9.4 seven-channel home theater amplifier, the company’s first digital and first multichannel home theater power amplifier. The Integra DTA-9.4 “Pure Digital” amplifier provides very high sound quality in part through exclusive digital technology and also by maintaining exceptional power linearity across the full impedance range of modern loudspeakers. It is capable of delivering 120 Watts into seven channels at 8 Ohms, and perfectly doubling that power to 240 Watts per channel into 4 Ohms.

Designed specifically for multichannel home theater, the DTA-9.4's unique digital design gives it an operating efficiency of 90%, more than twice that of conventional class AB amplifiers, while at the same time having a smaller “footprint.” The high output current, 400 kHz switching power supply features 156,000 microfarads of capacitance for nearly inexhaustible current reserves, and complete compatibility with low impedance 4-Ohm speaker loads.

The DTA-9.4 marks the first implementation of Integra's Vector Linear PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) technology, which combines an advanced digital switching topology with sophisticated shaping circuitry for remarkably detailed and efficient audio amplification. This shaping is performed using Vector Linear technology derived from the company’s high end D/A converters. This “remasters” the incoming analog signal, significantly reducing any potential pulse noise in the signal and improving overall accuracy.

Most digital amplifier power supplies are plagued by noise caused by the transient capacitance inherent in switched MOSFET devices. But thanks to an ingenious circuit that monitors this characteristic, the DTA-9.4’s “Zero Switching Power Supply” only switches when this value is zero, resulting in a highly accurate power supply output.

For use with compatible equipment, such as the Integra DTC-9.4 preamplifier/processor, the amplifier features gold plated balanced XLR inputs for improved signal transfer. Of course there are also extremely high quality gold-plated unbalanced terminals. Heavy-duty gold plated speaker terminals allow for the use of banana plugs, or spade lugs.

Each channel of the DTA-9.4 features a completely independent circuit topology for superior reproduction fidelity. The amplifier benefits from an ultra low internal impedance design, thanks to the extensive use of copper bus bar and heavy gauge wiring, to provide superior response to transients and variations in the speaker load. The high efficiency of the PWM design eliminates the need for a noisy cooling fan.

For integration with home theater systems, there is a 12-volt trigger input terminal for remote turn-on and “DimmerLink” to the DTC-9.4. The amplifier also includes a heavy-duty, audiophile-grade oxygen free copper detachable power cord.

The Integra DTA-9.4 will be available in May at a suggested retail price of $3,000.

Reading this post: what are the exact differences and relations between Onkyo, Integra Research and Integra Home Theater? On their websites I couldn't find an answer (how strange: www.integraresearch.com gives a link to integrahometheater.com, but integraresearch.net does not, and integraresearch.net has a link to onkyo-sites while .com does not...).

Second question: will this pre/pre - amp set be available in Europe at some time?

To sum it up...WOW! 8O Integra seems to have thought of everything with this pre/pro. And the msrp is as attractive as the finish of the product.

The fact that the amp actually doubles it's power with 4 ohm loads speaks for itself.

I am licking at the chops for a review! :B

I really like the minimalist styling on the amp. If the buttons on the pre/pro were hidden behind a door ala Yamaha RX-V1, this would be one of the most attractive pre/pro/amp combos out there. The pre/pro definitely has all the latest attractions, doesn't it? One question though. How did they get a 7-channel amp to double it's output into a 4-ohm load and only weigh 39 lbs? 8O I thought that was a brute-power-supply function. Is it the "switching" design? How does that work with an output spike on all channels?

Onkyo is the "parent" company for both Integra Home Theater and Integra Research and is known for well-made mass market A/V merchandise. With its large manufacturing capacity and high volume of production and sales, it typivcally has lower "set up" costs than a small "boutique" operation and can get lower prices on bulk quantities of just about anything it orders, which ultimately benefits its other divisions with lower overhead and unit costs.

Integra Home Theater is a separate division and represents the next step up in quality and design refinement, kind of like Toyota Camry/Avalon compared to the base models. Some of Integra's earlier designs shared many cosmetic and functional similarities to the top models in the Onkyo line, but the lines seem to be getting more distinct these days. At the very least, the Integra products are presumably assembled to more exacting standards with more stringent tolerances for internal components. Until the separates just announced, they had concentrated on source components and upper-level receivers.

Integra Research is the "high end" division, (sort of the "Lexus" to Onkyo'/Integra Home Theater's "Toyota"), geared to competing with the top names in the business and catering to custom installers. It led the way with very high quality, near-state-of-the-art, but comparatively reasonably priced separates, a path that is now being taken by Integra Home Theater, with even more aggressively-priced feature-rich separates. The Integra Research components were designed in collaboration with outside firms with "high end" reputations to give them a boost in name recognition and prestige.

THe two sites are geared to different markets, with www. integraresearch.com being aimed at the US, while www.integraresearch.net is for the European, Middle East and Africa markets. In the US, Integra Research has tried to minimize public awareness of their link with Onkyo to try to maximize any high end cachet the Integra Research brand could muster, so it makes sense that they would not post the Onkyo logo or a link to the Onkyo site on the Integra Research web site.

I'm sure even if you asked Integra Home Theater, they'd say something like "check with your European distributor". When the Integra Research products first became available, they were not being distributed in Europe and now they are, so the chances would seem good that the Integra Home Theater units will make it over there eventually, if not already.

While hiding the buttons may be more attractive than having them exposed, (I sure liked the way that looked on my Yamaha DSP-A3090), they have left the "most used" buttons available for convenient use without having to slide a panel out of the way or wait for a motorized "door" to open". Although I typically use the remote to control my RDC-7 which has a similar arrangement of exposed "most-used" and hidden "rarely-used" buttons, I am at the front panel to select a source often enough that it really is convenient NOT to have to slide a panel out of the way to push the correct button. But I still agree with you that aesthetically, "less is more". :>)
