1st post, need help (video through reciever)

OK, IM a little slow. I purchased an onkyo TX-DS787 about 8 years ago and just today realized It has 2 component in and 1 component out set of jacks behind it. My HD mitsubishi is the same age and it only has 1 set of component inputs. Now that I have two HD devices to run through this TV Im looking for a way to connect both devices at the same time without having to unplug one to use the other. Will these inputs/outputs on the back of my onkyo serve this purpose or are they for something else. I currently have it connected this way but Im getting no picture so Im wondering is there something I need to do in the onkyo's menu to tell it what Im doing or should it automatically detect what I did? I have triple checked now to make sure all the component cables are connected properly and they seem to be. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jon

By the way I purchased a PHILLIPS component switcher box today that does what I want but it distorts the picture terribly.

Connect each source to each of the component ins then component out to the display.I'm not famliar with your rec to know if there are any settings you need to adjust for video.Bsically youll be doing component switching thru your reciever.

You are correct in your assumption about the purpose of these component in and out jacks. Note that the top set of inputs is #1 and the middle set is #2 (the bottom set is the outputs, of course). You have to coordinate these video inputs with the like numbered audio inputs. You are likely using coax or optical digital audio from your DVD player. Make sure that the menu for DVD lists as #1 digital (COAX or Optical) audio, then connect the component cables from your DVD player to the #1 inputs and the component out cables to your TV. See pages 34-36 in your manual. (The initial default setting has DVD set to COAX 1 and Video 1/VCR 1 to COAX 2).

Here's a link for the manual:
        www.intl.onkyo.com/downloads/manuals/pdf/tx-ds787_manual_e.pdf

I see that my explanation is poor. Look again at the manual and you should be able to figure it out.

thanks alot for your help guy's it works great now. I had it connected properly but I had to go to the OSD menu to set it up properly. All these years I have been manually switching inputs on my TV then having to manually change my reciever to the proper source. Wow, this is much better. Thanks again, Jon

              HDMI or Component Video?
              by mitch57
I'm trying to decide which way to go when I hook up my new HD plasma display.

Setup #1: My receiver (Denon 3805) has component out which I'm thinking of connecting to the plasma. I would then connect my Tivo HR10-250 box with either S Video or Component to the receiver which will...

I've outgrown my H/K AVR-7000. I have 4 component video sources, the 7000 has only 2 component inputs. I have 6 digital audio sources while the 7000 only provides for 4 inputs.

I'm currently using a cheap switchbox for the component inputs and manually swapping digital ins when necessary....
