HT build: Statements II L/R, Statements II C, Finalist Surrounds and Rythmik F15hp x2

11 years ago I built the overnight sensations while living in the UK, they were appropriate for budget and space. In 2015 we moved back home to Australia, so in early 2015 I bought all the parts for this build. Since then I've built a house (as a owner builder), had our second child and now it's finally time to build my speakers after having all the parts on the shelf for 6 years.

I've had some experience with CNC and mach3, and wanted to do rebated edges so everything self jigs. So I bought a 1.5m x 1.5m queen bee kit last year and build it at the start of the year.

Work and other commitments then got in the way, so I finally started the actual speakers build a few weeks ago. Took me a little while to sort out gremlins in the machine, but running nicely now.

    First up, sub parts

First Sub done, minus roundovers. There's hidden magnets for a grill if the Mrs wants it.

So that's where I'm at. Hoping to get the second sub and centre glued up tomorrow.

The sub's I'll have sprayed in 2 pac satin black, the 7 x speakers done in American red oak with a darkish stain, similar to the ATMOS speakers I did awhile ago but a bit darker.

How is that cnc machine? The price seems pretty reasonable.

It's surprisingly good. Accurate to around 0.1mm, the only issue is the depth control, I need to sort out a better base and spoiler board arrangement. It's made some of my 2mm rebates a bit of an issue when they vary up to 0.5mm.

      Overall it's exceeded my expectations.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but that Queen Bee is the BOMB, and that is a very reasonable machine for sure.

How did you decide on a controller, though? I have a TON of CAD experience, and can create all the GCODE files that could ever be needed, but that doesn't mean that I know anything about actually controlling a machine like this. It appears that you did not go with the recommended controller option from QueenBee. Just curious what drove you to a different controller.

        Speakers, and parts look GREAT!!!

The controller is an option from here

QueenBee PRO Bulk-Man 3D is the largest wholesaler of Open Source CNC parts to the world. By having the parts produced ourselves, or sourcing the parts directly from the factory, we eliminate the m…

If I bought again I'd got with an ethernet one, not USB. This one has a few little quirks around homing etc, but once I had the machine grounding sorted out it's been reliable.

I'd also build the electronics in a metal box so I didn't have to ground all the connectors independently.

              Thanks for the reply!

Which one did you end up with? When I look at the options that they have, it appears that they only have one that has ethernet connectivity, and that's thru WIFI, and that's the recommended solution, the CNC xPRO V5. It's also the most expensive, by about another 1/3, but I know for me, I need simple over powerful when it comes to stuff like this. If I have to monkey around with it a lot, I'm probably going to lose interest pretty quickly. I just want tools to work...

I went with the UC300 which is USB. However it still has been ok once I fixed the grounding.

                      Thanks Jim!

So the subs, centre and 4 x finalist surrounds are glued. Will do the mains in the next week / two, then a side project of the RS225 and RS28f (mark K's) 2 way for the workshop after that.

Then on to finishing and building crossovers.

Long time since an update, I've finished the fronts, center and the two subs painted. Happy with how the finishing turned out.

They sound amazing, even with my very sub optimal room placement. They have a big room gain on the low end when looking at the measurements from REW, but I kind of like that. Unfortunately due to the fireplace column in the middle of the room the imaging isn't quite perfect, but the detail is magnificent so I'll take that.

                        They're being driven with rotel RB1572 for fronts (2 x 500w), 1575 for centre and surround( 5 x 500w). Denon 3700h receiver.

Just doing the top coats on the surrounds now, then will try and drag them all together for a completion photo.

Dang, finalists for surrounds? I was thinking of overnight sensations personally. Why not just make full size statement surrounds? Lol when in Rome

American red oak, paper backed. I had to import it from the US as there aren't any paper backed veneer suppliers here in Australia. Stained with general finishes nutmeg gel stain.

They're all finished now. Turned out to be a big project. I need to make some better stands for the surrounds, will match the style of the statements bases. I'm away for 2 months for work now, so will be likely in the new year.
