    Sound and Salt...

Interesting effect that soundwaves have on salt particles.
Figured it would be right up the alley of some of the DIY guys interested in science.

Its not an effect of sound on the salt. The sound is vibrating the panel and as the frequency changes the vibration of the panel changes. The salt is poured on so you can see with your eyes what the sound is doing to the panel. The patterns are all related to resonant modes in the panel related to comparing its physical size with the frequency being used at the time. Pretty neat to watch.

It's interesting that the major shifts in pattern are at half-steps Not surprising really.

And, of course, it looks like ripple tank results because it IS.

You know, I guess this could be an interesting way to look at your finished cabinet and decide, "I want to put another brace THERE".

If you played a bunch of tones and the salt would never stay put on a certain spot, then that spot would be moving a lot, and bracing would fix it in place better. It seems like a quick and dirty way to add braces just where you need them without doing any crazy FEA.

The next best brace will always be "in the middle"

Though a smart person will go slightly off center.

Oh ok, so thats caused by the the panel resonanting at certain frequencies. I'm guessing each pattern corresponds to a different harmonic?

I just thought it was neat!

So could everyone that's listened to it so far hear it all the way up? What frequency do you think it got up to? I had to turn my speakers down because it was hurting my ears when it got to the highest ones lol. I heard it all the way.

This reminds me..my uncle is an engineer at an ultrasonic silicon manufacturing facility. It's an interesting process; one I don't totally understand. Something about chemical slurries & sending certain frequencies through the pieces to break them...I've toured the facility, but that was years ago; before I knew what a hertz was

                    Tweeter/panel resonance. Explanations?
                    by nodiak
Hi , first post here. I have questions about systems too but I wanted to ask if anyone here could help explain what is going on in this video. I think some of you have seen it as it's been on Madisound forum. It may be an old issue.

Mods: I didn't know where to list this topic as the other areas of the forum don't seem to have much action going on.

I am moving into a place where the power goes down a lot.
I have invested a lot of money(for me) in my electronics and would like to keep them as safe as possible....

Little bug relative to front panel display ?
                    by LaurentG
                    Hi all

I would like to know if you noticed the same thing.
When playing a DVD soundtrack encoded in DD 1.0, the front panel display let me believe that the RSP-1066 is decoding a 5.1 soundtrack while only the center channel should be displayed.

                    When playing a DVD...

Panel on 1066 to Remove for upgrade
                    by sindel
                    Hello!

This forum has been extremely helpful to understand many features of my 1066. Now an ignorant newbie question. I went to do my first firmware upgrade per the instructions posted and was a bit stumped when looking for the panel to remove.

                    BK, HK, Lex related?
                    by infinitiqx4
how are b&k, harman, and Lexicon related?

I'm trying to find a pre/pro or good receiver to act as a pre/pro. BK50 has been recommended and I've been looking at the HK520, 525, 8000 for a while. I've also read good things about Logic7 on the Lex.
