    RC-1090 value

    Hey,
    So my upgrade money is running thin & it's probably better spent on a new CD player (but I'm considering holding out for a Benchmark DAC1), but I have a chance to buy a RC-1090 from a friend of a friend.

    Right now I have a RC-970BX MkII, so I assume this is a decent step up. But, if it's just going for fair market value I'll probably wait to upgrade my pre. If it's a good deal I'll probably jump on it. There's one on Audiogon for $550 but it looks like it's been on there for a while, so I'm guessing they go for less, just not sure how much.

    Also, how does it compare to an older top-of-the-line like the RC-995? I actually prefer the more understated look of the 995 and looks like those could be had for around $300.

    Any opinions?

      IMHO, the RC-1090 for $550 is a good buy. I have a 1090 and a RC-1082 - both very good values for the money. Retail is about $1200.

          Thanks for the input. Have you heard a RC-995? The 1090 for $550 is just an example on audiogon, the one I was going to get through the guy I know would be about $400-$450, but I'm wondering if I'd get as good sound from a 995 for around $300?

              I have not heard the RC-995 but when Rotel makes a model change they are usually a 'better sounding' design. The RC-1090 was the TOTL 2-ch pre that Rotel had. My RC-1082 is still breaking in but my thoughts are it will be just as good. The onboard phono stages are OK, not exceptional. I am using a graham Slee Era Gold V becuase the gain is better than the Rotel onboard.

                  Im using a RC 1090 now...very good pre. You should jump on it...you will be glad you did.

                      Unfortunately I missed out. The guy took well over a week to get back to me about it and now he just let me know someone else came and made him an offer so he sold it on the spot. Guess I'll keep my eyes open for another good deal. Thanks for the advice.

                          Interested if anyone has an RB1080 or 991 teamed up with either RC1070 or older pre-amp such as RC995. In doing research, a used RC955 costs about same as a new RC1070. Wait are the differences and sonic characters on either pre-amp? Any info greatly appreciated. Tyring to make a hard decision on investing...

                          I just picked up a RC1090 from Audiogon, the unit is in excellent condition and sounds very nice. I had an RC1070 before which always seemed a bit bright to me, the RC1090 is very smooth.

                          Anyway the one small downer on the deal is that the seller failed to mention...

                          I currently use the RC 995 preamp. Its a very musical preamp that doesn't lack a lot compared to high end preamps I've heard. But I'm wondering about upgrading to the RC 1590. Any comments on the 1590? Is it too very musical or does it lack compared to their older preamps like my 995? I need tape inputs...
