    Rotel model numbers

    Hi there,
I'm looking at upgrading my 2-ch stereo system and have heard nothing but good things about Rotel. I'm leaning towards used equipment as it fits my budget but have a few questions about the various model numbers I see floating about, but can't find too much info on them. If you can add to my understanding, or correct any of my mistakes below, I'd really appreciate it.

    For power amps anyway:

Some of the older series stuff (ie. 8xx or 9xx) has models that are followed by BX, AX, or nothing. What does this mean? Is this a Class A, Class B, Class A/B sort of thing? Or is it a quality thing - i.e. AX is top of the line, BX is entry level?

Any opinions on what to look for or what to avoid?

I gather the first number is the series and indicates what stuff is newer (i.e. 8xx series, 9xx, 10xx, 15xx) - bigger number, newer stuff. Has Rotel always produced great gear, or have some series been knock-outs and some dudds?

Middle number seems to go up with power, ie. RB-1080 has more power than RB-1070.

Last number seems to relate to the number of channels for the amp:
    0 - stereo; 1 - mono; 5 - 5 channel; etc

MkII - not sure what this stands for (is it just a slightly revised version of a previous model)?

Are there any compatibility issues between various models? I bought a used pre-amp RC-970BX MkII. Do I need to match the power amp to this at all (i.e. does it also need to be a BX model, or 900 series, MkII, etc).

    Thanks for the help.

Again, can't help with the old stuff too much.

No real duds that I can think of.

Yup, Mark2 I think. Slight redesign, slight updates, etc...

Nope, shouldn't matter a bit. Here's a link for archived manuals. Should help you distinguish different models:

      9xx vs 10xx
      by LiamC
      Hi all,

Been reading these forums for a while and just wanted to let everyone know the advice in here is fantastic. Enough sucking up on to the questions.

I was curious as to how people thought the 985 and 991 stacked up against the 1075 and the 1080. I realise there have...

      Difference RB-985 and RB-985 MKII
      by silvestro
I have the opportunity to buy a RB 985 for £340. What is the difference between this model and the RB985 MKII and is the price I have been offered on the MKI reasonable?

      RB-985 MKII - A good amp?
      by Kevin P
I found a used Rotel RB-985 MKII 5-channel amp. Is this a good amp to get? Is $550 a fair price? According to the ad it's 120 watts/channel, no other specs listed. I know amps don't really evolve much so if it's old that shouldn't be a problem, unless there's something about this model that isn't...

Model: RB-1552 MkII standby light stays on
      by franin
Hi all I have a RB-1552 MkII and noticed with the 12v trigger on when not in standby the standby light stays on. Is that normal ? I have contacted Rotel Australia and I kid you not the guy there had no idea. He was meant to give me a call back once he found out ( that was 2 weeks ago ) but nothing....

      Rotel RMB1095. MKI vs MKII
      by TimbaLand
A friend is looking for the RMB1095. He found one from a guy closer to where I leave and he asked me to go check it out. I had the same amp before and I know there were 2 versions. Most obvious difference being the binding posts, 12v trigger and that MKII was available in black or silver and black....
