Kal,Originally posted by Kal RubinsonThe differences that I hear among the amps has, I believe, nothing to do with the power ratings of the amps because, frankly, I do not play much music that places great dynamic demands on them. Sure, the occasional Mahler symphony but usually I am listening for clarity and balance. In my room and with my listening habits, 200wpc is adequate.
Kal
just curious did you notice that for a jump in dynamics this appeared at say the 650+ watt marks when compared to other amps between 200 to 400?
I am just asking because from my own experience between 200 and 400 it was more about clarity and balance like you say (my main reference 2-channel ended up being a Chord Electronics SPM 1200e), however for the exciting dynamic sound that at times is like a shock-surprise, I did not really feel it until I used one of the big Musical Fidelity KW models that I purchased for the seconday system (occasionally put in the reference) - just nice alternative when wanting the slam and excitement-lushness, however it has more compromises than the 1200e IMO).
Strangely this was even noticable in my treated small room (without the average listening level being insane - above 85db spl) on the right recordings.

You are right, this is the way to set up a sub woofer for music. If you have LARGE speakers, the use a low crossover point like 40 hz. this is correct.
For Home Cinema in 5.1 or 7.1, we do not use a sub woofer, we use a LFE or Low Frequency "Effect". There is no ballance 20 to 20 to apply there. It is a personnal taste about the feeling you want when there is an explosion or special bass "effect" in the movie. In that configuration, you should set cross over point to 80 or 60hz not lower and set your speaker to SMALL. That way you protect your HI-FI components and get better effect.Jean-Pierre Imbeau

Nope. Remember, this is a music-only system and, to be specific, only the type of music that I select. The most powerful, low-frequency transients are bass drum and the hammer-blows in the Mahler 6. 200w handles these fine. No synth, no explosions, no firearms.Originally posted by OrbAh well, not sure that 2-channel would be making any difference in this, although there were only a few tracks I noticed a dramatic difference with anyway.
Possibly similar to the occasional Mahler symphony maybe you hinted at?

Depends on whose 200w we are talking about. Classe 3200 was just fine, as was the ML 436.Originally posted by wettouKal do you feel the 802D are well controlled with 200W?Kal Rubinson

I understand that when you set the Max setting on the subwoofer set-up menu, it basically sends a double bass signal - one to all speakers set to large and an identical bass signal to the subwoofer. This essentially doubles up on the bass being produced. I assume this might be worthwhile...-

by jkruegerHi all
I am new to the notion of subwoofers. I am not new to the htguide. I am seriously considering a sub for my 2 channel system because I am not willing at this point in my life to go to multi-channel, but I like the occasional movie. I currently am running Selah audio Scan-Speak...-

by Brian BungeI decided to post the specs of these drivers in a new thread. I've got a couple of the HO 10's that Darren sent me to try out. I'll say that I'm very impressed with the build quality. I'll see how they sound soon.
