Rotel RA1070 tape loop and X-10 buffer

    Hi All.

I just stumbled onto this forum and I'm just thrilled to find it!
It has been a great experience reading thru some of the posts.
I've been using the Rotel integrated amplifier RA1070 with
B&W CDM 1NTs. My sources are a slightly dated CAL CD player
(still sounds great!) and a cheapo Sony NS90V for SACD.
    I also run a B&W ASW-675 thru the pre-out of the RA1070.
I know it isn't the best way to connect the sub but till I earn
enough for the entire upgrade to HT, this will do...

Recently I added the Musical Fidelity vacuum tube buffer X-10 v3
to the CAL CD player and the quality improvement was
phenomenal! So, I got a bit more carried away and thought that
I could reap the benefit of "tube" output for all sources. For this,
I tried adding the X-10 to the tape loop of the RA1070. I did this
by connecting the TAPE1 out to X-10 in and X-10 out to TAPE1 in.
After this, I selected "recording" to point to CD and "listening" to
TAPE1. However, I can barely get a squeak out of the speakers.
I can hear very little even when I turn the volume control to almost
90%. What gives? The X-10 is not supposed to present any "load"
and it takes a line level input. When the X-10 is connected between
the CAL and RA1070, I get great sound and so at least the X-10 isn't
faulty. I also tried connecting the X-10 out to another place like
TAPE2 in and tried to listen thru that but that didn't do it either.
Neither my dealer nor Rotel tech support could provide any explanation.

Any pointers will be gratefully appreciated...

    Thanks for wading thru this,

Turn the volume down on your sub and hook it to the tape output while CD is selected. Slowly turn your sub up and see if you have output. This will rule out a bad record loop.

Thanks for the suggestion. The sub did not show any output even at volume.
So, I guess the diagnosis is a bad TAPE1 out?

Well to test if the tape out is bad just do the tape loop without the buffer inline and see if you have the same problem.
