Maybe a really dumb question: why double speaker terminals for 1080

Hi, I was wondering why each channel of the rb1080 has double terminals? Is this to facilitate biwiring?

Not a dumb question. If you are referring to the RB 1080 there are two set of connections one set for "standard style bananas" (or a variety there of) and a pair of XLR's. Typically use use only one set. In reality you may never hear the difference between either unless you run in excess of 50 ft or have a very noisy environment. The XLR's are a balanced line and typically used for long runs and you do see them in professional installations in theaters.

    Hope this helps.
BTW I used to live in "sunny San Clemente", a long time ago. :T

      Jeff:

thanks for the response. I was actually referrring to the dual pair of standard connections and not the XLRs. On my RB1080 each speaker output (L and R) has 4 speaker connection terminals.

      Any ideas?

BTW, why would you ever leave paradise??? Nice to speak with another San Clementian (is that right?).

The dual pairs of speaker outputs are for convenience only. They are wired in parallel.

If you already have a pair of standard speaker cables, you can just use a second pair of standard cables with the other set of outputs, rather than buy a bi-wire cable set.

It also gives you the opportunity, if using two standard cables, to use a different type of cable for the tweeter and the woofer.

If you are not bi-wiring, it doesn't matter which pair you use.

got it. so if i was to biwire like this (double biwire), is it recommened that I use a cross over and bypass the internal ones in the speakers? Is this even possible with signals coming from an amp versus doing the crossover from the line level signal from a prepro. Any benefit of doing (bi wire, double bi wire) this or should I just bi amp?

No if you want to bypass the crossovers' you'll need to move to electronic crossovers and move them before the amps. Biwire simply adds more resistance between the two crossovers which in theory allows them to opperate more independantly...its a very subtle effect. Bi amping uses two amps to power the same speaker with each amp connected to one set of binding posts on the speaker (tweeter and woofer)...this can be more significant but obviously at an increased cost with two amps.

              My mistake sorry
They are for bi-wiring. You can run two pairs of cables to each speaker if they are designed for bi-wiring . One of my sets of speakers are designed that way and that is how I ran them. It does make a difference.

I was stupid to leave San Clemete plus it is a long story and now I can not afford to move back.

                Bi wiring the RB 1080
                by dinyaar
                Hi,
My set up is a NAD PRE, RB 1080 power and B&W 603 s. The 1080 has 2 sets of speaker terminals though the manual does not indicate so!!!! Any way my question is whether it is better to use all the provided terminals in a biwire set up?
At the moment they are clubbed into 1 positve...

RB-1080 question - Double Binding Posts
                by Belgarath99
                Hi

I bought a demo Rotel RB-1080 last week to power my front speakers. As it is a demo unit, I did not get a manual with it. The unit has double binding posts on the rear panel.

My Dynaudio speakers does not have bi-terminals for bi-amping/bi-wiring. Does anyone know whether...

                Can I bi-amp with RSX 1067 and RB 1080?
                by Trevgrif
Hi. This is my first posting. I am about to take delivery of an RSX 1067, RB 1080 and RDV 1050. I am running B&W 805s fronts with B&W DM600S3 surrounds. Is it possible to feed the 1067 front speaker outputs to the tweeter terminals of the 805s and the output from the 1080 to the mid range terminals?...

RB 1080 A/B speaker terminal switch?
                by bleeding ears
Hi guys, just a quick question on how the RB1080 (with 8 speaker terminals on back, not 4 ) switches from "A" speakers to "B" speakers?

Is there a switch on the front or back panel?

Rotel's website does not show any switches on the unit for A/B speakers,...

                RB-1080 and 4ohm's?
                by jrh
Hey all. Question, I'm kicking around the idea (as in I might buy it today) of adding a RB-1080 to my 1056 receiver. The 1080 would be driving a pair of Axiom M80ti's which are a 4 ohm speaker. I'm sure this is a dumb question, but how does the 1080 do driving a 4 ohm load? The specs call out 200x2...
