    Questions about 1065

I just bought a 1065 and hope that you could shed some light on a few things.

    1. Does Rotel have a fix for the signal delay? I was hoping mine would not have this problem, but I miss the first few seconds of CD's and DVD's and there is also a 3 second delay in sound after a DVD layer change.

    2. When I turn on my receiver with the remote, the red (standby) light turns off for 2 or 3 seconds and then the receiver turns on. It's almost like the receiver shuts off before it comes on... hopefully this is normal.

    3. My last receiver (onkyo) was very loud at a volume of 50, but I have to turn the volume to about 60 - 63 for equal volume on Rotel. Is this by design?

Thanks for your help and thanks for putting up with my "Rotel Beginner" questions.

Hey Sammy, I am still getting used to my 1065, but I will try and help.

    1. I just started noticing the delay, but for me, it is probably less than a second and to be honest, the only time it happens is when switching surround modes. So say for instance, the menu screen of a DVD is set for DPLII, that is what I hear while working the menu of a DVd before playing. Then once I hit play, the DVD sends the DTS or whatever signal to the receiver and the switch takes probably 1/2 a second. So it doesn't bother me. But if your delay is different or longer, you may want to get it checked out.

    2. Not sure about the red light you are referring to, but mine does take a second or two power up.

    3. Volume - have you calibrated to a constant level? I do find that for movies (when wathcing without my wife) I end up with the volume more over 1/2 scale. I have configured all speakers to 75db.

    Hope that helps a little.

    E. J.

Good morning Sammy and welcome to Club Rotel.

Don't own the 1065, but the processing delay might indicate a problem with your unit. Like ejfiii wrote, while it isn't uncommon for a processor to take a moment locking onto a signal, this should only take a second and shouldn't be happening after things like layer changes. Again, I'm not personally familiar with the 1065, but this might be something you want to talk to the dealer about.

With regard to question #2, that's the same way it does it on the 1066 pre-pro. No problem there.

I also wouldn't worry about the volume thing, although it would be interesting if a few other 1065 owners would share how far they have to turn up the volume to reach reference level.

What firmware are you running? Check the FAQ thread to see if you have the latest version and if now upgrade it.

I believe this is normal .

The volume position means nothing between recievers since its all relative esp if they aren't calibrated and using a -dB scale. Anyway the take home message is that the actual volume number displayed means nothing unless the system is calibrated to a known level with a calibration DVD like Avia and an SPL meter. If you have questions about how to do that post a thread in the home theater area and we'll be happy to walk you though it. You migh also try doing a search since I know that's been asked before.

Danbry, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't reference volume whatever you calibrate the speakers to? In my case, I calibrated at 75db. If I am wrong, please let me know and I will tell you according to my calibration how much volume I need to reach reference.

No, you're definitely right, although different software programs callibrate reference at different outputs and factors such as room size and distance between the listening position and the speakers will result in different settings for different systems. What I was trying to do was get some feedback from other users of the 1065 as to how high they have to turn their units up to get a decent output to alleviate his concerns in this regard. So, I guess I was asking for how high different users have to turn up their volumes to achieve reference.

I used the sound level meter from Radio Shack to calibrate my speakers. I had to turn the volume to 75 on the 1065 to reach 75 decibels on the receiver test tones. Using the Sound and Vision tune-up DVD, my receiver volume was set to 70 to achieve 75 decibels on the disc test tones. Is this consistent with other Rotels? I don't mind setting the volume on the receiver to 60 - 64 for DVD's, but compared to my other receivers it seems like a very high number to achieve the same volume.

Thanks for being so helpful. I have been noticing that the auto detect delay is not as long as I originally thought. It's only about one second of delay at a layer change (still too long since my other receivers for a fraction of the cost had no delay at all). For those of you with no sound delay at all during auto detect, what kind of DVD player are you using and what kind of connection (coaxial, optical, etc.)?

              Thanks for your help!

Not that it means much but I calibrated with Avia so that 70 is reference level...different rooms, different amps (if used), distance from speakers, speaker effiecienses will all play a part in what that final number ends up being though.

As for equipement I'm currently using a Denon 1600 DVD player connected optically and a Sony CD player connected optically. Before the Denon I had a Sony DVD player connected via coax with no noticably delays on both my 1066 and the 1055 models.

I have a cheap Panasonic DVD connected via optical. I am about to pull the trigger on the new Sammy DVD with DVI output since I have a new monster plasma to take advantage of it.

With my 1066, I, like Andrew, use a Denon 1600. There is the usual 1 second or so layer change, but no problems with sound drop offs immediately after the layer change. Denon only allows an optical connection.

The high volume levels are easily fixed. You need to go out and buy a secondary amp, but just make sure the volume on the amp goes to 11, not the usual 10. That should solve all your problems.

I've got the Rotel 1065 receiver/amp and it comes with two sub pre-outs. The manual tells me they are RCA 1.2v (or close), out to the subwoofer amplifier.

I posted last week about my new 1065 receiver which took about 2.5 seconds to detect Dolby Digital.

Well, maybe someone can explain how I fixed it, but it all started last night when I noticed a random bass thumping sound in the center channel speaker while using the test tones in Pro...

Hi guys, I finally got moved into the new house this weekend and spent the better part of the weekend (much to my wife's dismay) hooking up the HT. I have not had a chance to calibrate anything yet, but sat down a few times to try to watch some things on the TV, just to test drive the HD cable.
