    Sub recommendation for 805S

I have 805S bi-amped with Arcam avr-250. Thinking of getting ASW825 for more bass, is that wise?
Room is living room connected to kitchen and dining room, so a big area.

    Welcome to the HTGuide Tommy!

That would be a great subwoofer for your setup, I believe Karma here has the same type of speaker setup but is using two ASW825's and had great results.

      Thanks for the welcome!

Since this will be my first sub, is there anything I should look into when setting up the sub?
Should I set the 805S to "small" and use the ASW825 as bass extension?

Welcome Tommy and in my opinion more bass is always wise as long as it's accurate. I am pure 2 channel with no HT at all. You don't mention how many channels so I'll approach this from my standpoint of a 2 channel music listener? I have found that smaller drivers for subs are much more accurate than large drivers. Such as 18inch drivers are enormously wonderful for HT but high powered 10 -12 inch drivers do much better for music in my opinion. I've never used B&W subs but no doubt they are very good. You may also have a look at the Sunfire EQ (11 inch cube) with auto room correction as a possible alternative for a very reasonable price. I use them with my system for music only and they perform surprisingly well with the 800D.

If you are an HT guy then no doubt the 825, 855 or Sunfire EQ Signature (13 inch cube with astounding amounts of earth shaking bass) would add a whole new and positive dimension to your system.

If you're new to subs then be sure and ask for some advice on set up. Subs can be tricky and can destroy 2 channel imaging if not integrated properly.

          @Tommy,

Sorry your set Arcam + B&W805 l/r --> upgrade new sub = ASW 825 great,
but test 750 and 825! ( event. 2 pieces Velodyne SPL1000R or superior and
in accord with Jesse111 Sunfire is sure not bad :T

Only music or is HT important for you? = yes, center?? (805 and a htm4s)

ASW 825 is a great choice

Yes, go for the ASW 825 as they will compliment the 805s you have wonderfully :T

I on the contrary, think that the larger the driver 15 ' and above are best for Music and HT, and give a smoother more accurate bass than smaller drivers ,so I differ than what Jesse111 said, but that is my ears and my opinion ,so no offence Jesse111 here! :W

I find the ASW 855 best, and I would get 2 of them if you like bass and are into HT, but if you are into music only i would get either the ASW 825 as you suggested ,or better the ASW 855 for more smoother, Low, In the gut feeling accurate bass. ;x(

I personally find the larger the driver the better and more accurate the bass will be IMHO!!!! :T

Good Luck and Please keep us posted.

            Cheers

              Hi There,

I have REL Starta 5 Sub, and is doing great in 2 channel Music, and also does great job in HT with its seperate low level connection, if you are for the music go for the sealed sub rather than the ported ones.

              Good Luck, :T

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will look into 750, sunfire, and REL strata 5 just to explore my options. I am leaning towards ASW825 to match 805S in the living room though. (also thinking about adding a HTMS4 in the future!)
I will use it for HT (70%) and music (30%) because I already have 804 with pre/pro for pure stereo in another room.
According to the manual, there is one mode for HT (low pass filter switched out) and one mode for music (low pass filter switched in), does that mean I have to walk over to the sub and manual change it everytime I listen to HT and music?

Tommy another option for you to consider is a Martin Logan Descent, I am really happy with its performance and how well it integrates with my setup.

I added an ASW 850 to my setup this summer (got a good price on audiogon.com), and the difference in sound quality is amazing vs. an older velodyne I was using. It mates quite well with my 805S/HTM4S fronts.

BTW, I set the 805S/HTM4S to 'Small' and set the crossover to 80Hz.

Another suggestion would be M&K subwoofers. They are extremely good for HT. A lot of their subwoofers are THX ULTRA/Select certified and are priced pretty reasonable.

To briefly recap, I was initially considering the 700 series, but was then trying to determine whether the 800 series would work for me given my slightly narrow room (12ft / 3.7m) and my wishes...

I would appreciate your help in a tough (for me) choice! If you were to choose one of the following set-ups, which one would you choose? (this is for both music and movies, and some SACD/Audio DVDs, in a small-ish living room):

                          Hi there.

I have a pair of B&W 705 with an ASW 750 subwoofer which I am fairly satisfied with. However the urge to upgrade once again has hit me, so Im wondering about buying the 805s and the ASW 850 subwoofer, or maybe the 825 sub. Im getting a discount on the 850 from my local dealer....

                          Hi guys,

I'm thinking of upgrading my speakers and I was wondering what your thoughts are on the 805s and 703s.

I haven't heard either speaker yet, but I can tell you that my listening room for now is only 9' x 12' .

I listen to a wide variety of music, and...
