Always good to revive this thread every once in a while.

For some reason, I got AC/DC stuck in my head a few weeks ago. I watched "School of Rock" the other day, which reminded me of some good old rock music, so I picked up AC/DC's "Live" album today for $13. Never thought I'd own one of their albums.

Maybe I'm getting old. Maybe my tastes are maturing. But I'm starting to appreciate more of the media in music and film that could be called "epic", "historical", or "ground-breaking". Not just stuff that entertains, but stuff that really tells a good story, is good music and well arranged, etc. It's not like AC/DC is classic stuff or anything, but they've definitely put out some good stuff over the years.

Who knows, maybe next I'll pick up some "The Who" or "The Beatles"?

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

It's funny you should mention The Beatles. I just recently pulled out Abbey Road and have been enjoying it a lot. By today's standards it's fairly simplistic, but by that days' standards, WOW!
        :E

Some of the other stuff I've been listening to lately is:

        CD's:
Beth Hart - Screamin' For My Supper
        Stone Sour - Stone Sour
Little Feat - Time Loves A Hero
Pat Metheny w/David Bowie - The Falcon & The Snowman
Gov't Mule - Life Before Insanity

Some recent stuff I've been listening to:

          Harry Connick Jr. ONLY YOU
Robbie Williams SWING WHEN YOU'RE WINNING ( I'm a sucker for traditional pop).

I'm also looking for the soundtrack to Kill Bill Vol 1. Some interesting music in that flick.

Well, something strange has happened to me. I've always listened to classical music, but it never was my main listening passion. Now, it is. Over the last few months, I must have purchased at least 150 recordings and I'm hooked. At the moment, I'm listening to Charles Ives: An American Journey, which I enjoy very much. Most of what I listen to would fall into the Romantic period, but I also enjoy Baroque, classical, and post-Romantic music quite a bit.

Can't figure out why this has happened to me, but it has. Maybe it has something to do with the new set of headphones and headphone amp I bought. They do a great job with classical. Maybe it's my age. Maybe it calms me. I really don't know.

Or it just maybe a phase, Keith. I recall back in the 70's I went through a period where classic was most of what I bought ( LPs then) and listened to. I still love classical, but I'm not as obsessed with it as I was in the 70's.

How true George. I do seem to go through phases. Well, yesterday, I went out and bought a CD by Johnny Cash. Man, I love him. Already have a couple more CD's by him I want to buy. Still, classical has to be here to stay. I bought too many recordings and still have quite a few being shipped as we speak.

Aw, I love Johnny Cash, too. Just haven't gotten around to buying that last one he recorded. Most of what I have on Cash is in my LP collection, and there are quite a few. But it's time to add some CDs.

Cool George, maybe you can help me a bit here. I'm interested in two more Cash CD's at the moment: American Recordings and Sings the Ballads of the True West. Have you heard either of these? If so, would you recommend them.

By the way, the one I bought this weekend was American III. It contains some great music, but what I loved most were the notes he wrote about the recording session. I don't think everyone realizes what a great, moral individual he was.

by the way, were you able to catch the PBS special?

Sorry Keith,I don't believe that neither of the titles you mentioned are LP albums, at least as far as I know. The CDs could be compilations of earlier recorded stuff, and some of the songs may be on some of the albums I have. "Ballads Of The True West" does sound familiar, though, and may have been available on LP. I do have many Cash albums but they are a far cry from all the albums he recorded.

Re: The PBS special: yes, I liked the show very much.

Keith, a good album to look out for if it's available on CD is the Columbia release of HELLO, MY NAME'S JOHNNY CASH. There are some great songs on this album, including IF I WERE A CARPENTER with June Carter Cash, and if memory serves he sings a couple of others with her. This was out around the time he had a hit TV show, and the show always started with " Hello, my name's Johnny Cash."

                              Hey, I remember that show!!!

Yes, it is so hard to choose because the guy has a trillion releases. I'll try to make a decision shortly, but am thinking of American Recordings. That seems to be pretty universally lauded. Hope Borders comes out with another coupon this week.

It's "sort of" new- a few years old (1999). I have newer albums from them, but of the recent ones, it's one I keep coming back to, like some of their older favorites for me- "Close to the Edge" (remastered version), "Relayer", "Tales from Topographic Oceans", and probably my all time favorite, as it has more of the players from the various versions of Yes, "Union" (1991).

Yes is something I enjoy cranking up when no one's around- a solitary vice? Most of the folks I know out here in Northern CA my age are not into English progressive rock! Must be my former musician genes...

Today at work was a multitude of unnecessary crises. Net result was a look into the cd bin to find something to soothe my frailed nerves.

First up: Miles Davis Kind Of Blue SACD in multi-channel. Superb multi-channel recording which really sounds great in surround sound.

Batting Second: Otis Redding Deep Memphis Soul. This is a Starbucks Hear Music compilation well worth the price of listenting. There is nobody better than the soulfullness of Otis. it was truly a sad day when his plane went down so many years ago.

Next Up: Patty Griffin's 1000 Kisses. Patty returned to Boston from Austin, Texas last Sunday evening to a sold-out Mother's Day show at the Berklee Performance Center.

Now I feel relaxed and rejuvenated. I now know why I have invested my time and $$ in my sound system. It is certainly wonderrful to just listen to some recordings which have not been in my cd player for some time.

My Friday evening decompression session was a little bit louder. Dave Matthews Some Devil (the live bonus disc of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds live at various colleges is very upbeat) and the hybrid stereo SACD recording of Bruce Cockburn Anything Anytime Anywhere Singles 1979-2002 really made my Friday night. What are you listening to?

I've heard a couple of the Stone Sour tunes...I know what you are talking about.

It was just an off the cuff comment, because mostly I was seeing Jazz and lite stuff

I'll admit to having David Sanborn and Boney James in the changer right next to Seether and Shinedown :E

Me too. Wife doesn't outright hate it (like she does The Who and some of my other stuff), but I always get the dreaded "can you turn that down a little?".

I've bought all their first 8 albums or so about 4 times now, vinyl, british imported vinyl, original CD release and now the remastered ones from a few years back. Now they're supposedly going to be available on DVD-A (or already are?), but my system don't do that.

There's a pretty good concert DVD (this one) from a few years ago where they play Ritual, Close to the Edge and a bunch of the older stuff. You should check that one out.

A friend from Missouri out here on business brought one of her early CD's "Grace in Gravity"...

This article will describe the fruits of my efforts to build a moderate sized speaker which might be moderately above average in performance for a basic two-way system. I desired a speaker like this both for my own use in secondary systems, and to fill a need for some friends, who desired fairly full range response (i.e., “it’s gotta have good bass”). Also, though I have access to a good wood shop, many potential DIY enthusiasts may not, so I hoped to use a modified...

Sometime while I was at the movie and out to dinner, the folks from the post office dropped off a package I've been waiting...

I usually listen to music in my living room, but since this was a video I watched it in my HT on the big 8 foot screen. Now the PQ was nothing to rave about; most live shows have weird lighting, but the soundtrack was fabulous. The percussion really made...
