    Ry Cooder

My sister is in town from San Francisco and brought some of her music, of course. While listening together, the subject of Ry came up, and reinvigorated my appreciation of not only his vast amount of work but the quality of its recording.

This has inspired me dig up the few of his works I have on LP.
    Currently spinning 'JAZZ'.
    No disappointment.

      Ry Cooder "Borderline"

      On the platter now.
This one is in better condition, but regardless, the quality of the engineering is blatantly evident on both LP's.

And just to be perfectly clear, this is music you want to listen to, not the 'audiophile demo' crap we hear so often used to justify material obsessions.

Oh, and then you get that great cover art experience, too :W

Yeah, great cover art. Looks like that guy(?) is about to be gored in the nether regions. He looks a bit androgynous.

I think the analog forum would be a nice home for this thread. Just my 2 cents. You know best, of course, oh great and mighty, infinite being, moderator.

I will request a consult with the 'Great Oracles' of HTG' and purpose this request to the 'All-Knowing Adminstrators' to allow them to determine the best path. ;x(

Well, the mustache threw me and are those small breasts or large pecks.

Which brings me to a story from my youth, hiking with my friend when I was 14. I looked up ahead on the trail and pointed out a shirtless guy talking with a lady friend. I told my friend "man, that guy has large breasts."

The two of them stood there talking to each other, glancing down the trail at us a few times. Then they proceeded hiking down the trail.

As they got closer the bright pink nipples, perky breasts, and flowing red hair in a pony tail told the story. She was topless, about 20, and said "Hi Boys" as she walked by. We also said hello, and I suppose and thank you would have been in order as well, but we didn't say that.

Oh, John, that's quite the story. Lucky dog. I would have hoped it ended with something like, "and after I got her number, we had a passionate relationship for 10 years, full of nude hiking."

Yeah, me too. You don't the half of it ... if only I could go back change some things. Same most everyone I'm sure. Well, I was 14 and it was more like "Shock and Awe." :B

I not sure how that would have worked though ... "um, I like your breasts, could I have your number?" That pick up line hasn't worked for me yet. Maybe, "You've got a great attitude ... ," "I like the all natural look ... ," or something or other.

Okay, I'll shut my yap now.

Hahahahaa... yeah, how would you go about starting up a conversation there? And then during that "conversation"... would you try to be only be staring straight into her eyes? Ah, if you were only 14 though, that might not have worked, if she was 20. A topless redhead, though... woof... what an idea.

This is the original 1975 Columbia release, and is in great shape. Can't listen to it however since my LP rig is down with a broken cart. Has a post card and playing card ... hmm

I have not posted in this thread in over 6 months! Yikes. Good to see it bumped up. I've picked up a lot. I'll start with various Mosaic boxsets. I got lucky, all these LP boxsets are out of print.

The Basie Jam, Horace Silver & Ornette Coleman look most interesting!
Of course all those ‘Complete’ volumes are just decadent!

Thanks for dropping by, Atane. Your updates are always a reminder of just how much great music is out there.

Definitely Bill! Will post more often in this thread. :T

As an aside, I think I have a new audiophile in the family. My baby niece loves music. She's always pointing and motioning for the records. She doesn't care for CDs! I gave her a CD and she flung it to the ground. She just likes records! I think it's the cover art that intrigues her.

Not long ago, I took these pics.

After she had some breakfast, she made a beeline for some records. She pulls out Sun Ship by John Coltrane. She smiles and hands it to me. I go to put it back on the shelf, and it looks like she’s about to cry. I pull it back out and gave it to her. The smile returns. I took these pics quickly, and then played the record for her. She sat there listening, and smiling. 18 months old, and already into Coltrane. Success! No urging from me, she just did it. I think she absorbed the music I played whenever she visited me, so she now likes John Coltrane, Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye to name a few.

This was on sale for $16 at Elusive Disc.
I could not pass it up.
                                        The SQ is really good.
As good a some LP's I have spent way more on.

                                          Some nice ambient......
Some Poo Poo digital mastering on LP, but I have many that are quite good.
This one does not prove me wrong.

Honestly, if I had bought all these new, they could not sound better. In fact, some new vinyl purchases have proven a bit disappointing. I have never been so lucky, and probably will not have a harvest like this one for some time to come.

Some days the bear gets you, and then some days you get the bear.

Dace Brubeck - Time in Outer Space

I found this one used a few weeks ago.
It looked to be in good shape and I took a chance on this Six Eye Mono.
I already have a Two Eye Stereo……..OCD is part of collecting vinyl……..no way around it.
I've been evaluating the new DAC for the past few weeks,
but the Sirens of analog have lured me back with their sweet seductive song yet again.
First spin for this one tonight after a quick turn on the VPI 16.5.

Oh my, I got lucky. It is in perfect shape.
                                                  What a nice welcome home.

Rod was truly a modern day Renaissance Man. An earlier victory over tongue cancer diverted him from the profession of classical trumpet player. As a luthier, his creations have been appreciated and played by the best artists of our time, including Yo Yo Ma. As a man, he was able to elicit the ultimate potential in each person he came in contact with. When you were with Rod, you were always the best you could ever be. As a friend, he was the most valuable human asset a person could have. He introduced me to the joy of music and the passion for its perfect reproduction. More importantly, he showed everyone he met the passion we should all have for life. There are no ordinary moments.

From Towndock.net - The cover Photos on the 10 April 2012 edition.

Kip and Rod Nicholas at last July’s Croakerfest. Rod Nicholas passed away Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He was 62. For the past decade, the Nicholases hosted Sunday afternoon croquet games on their front lawn; in Rod’s honor, a croquet flag has been flying at half-staff.

On the lawn of Rod and Kip Nicholas’ home near the Lou Mac Pier, a croquet flag was flying at half-staff Monday. For years, the Nicholas’s hosted Sunday afternoon croquet games on that lawn. This past Sunday, Rod Nicholas died after several years of fighting cancer. The Canadian-born violin maker had owned a violin studio in Pittsburgh before moving to Oriental.

Bill, this is a touching tribute to your friend Rod. Cancer is a bitch of a thing. He's at peace now. Thank you for sharing. Cheers.
