Hi everybody,
I need your help figuring out if the spinning sound my brand new RDV-1093 is making is normal.
First a little background:
2 years ago I bought the RDV-1060. At first it was okay, perfect picture quality and no spinning sound issues. After about one year I was noticing the disc spinning during quiet passages in the movie. The sound is actually quite like an el cheapo DVD-rom player in your computer, which doesn't understand that a movie can be played at single speed and therefore spins the disc like it was a data disc. At about 1.5 years it became so annoying I brought it back for service. It came back from my dealer with a 'fixed laser' according to the repair sheet, but when I plugged it in at home the spinning sound was still clearly heard. I brought it back in for another service, asking for a complete drive change out. The service department changed the drive, but still the problem remained. It had taken about 4 months to this point and I was getting fed up with this problem. My old, and not so expensive, Sony replaced the Rotel during at absence and was as silent as could be. I brought the Rotel back to my dealer and asked him to contact Rotel directly and see what could be done. Rotel agreed to trade the 1060 in for the 1093, but I had to pay the price difference. Seeing as my options with 1060 were depleted, I decided to upgrade to its bigger brother because I will buy a large flatscreen shortly and could use the HDMI and upscaling of the 1093.
I picked up the 1093 today, but was utterly disappointed when it made exactly the same high level of disc spinning noise. It seems I have to place the Rotel in a closed box or something, but I really don't believe this is normal behavior of such an expensive piece of gear.
I know Rotel can make completely quiet drives, because I also own the RCD-1072 and am very happy with its disc spinning abilities!
Anybody any ideas of what is going on, or experiencing the same issues?
