Hey, what sort of amp do these guys need to be driven by? I was thinking of going with the NAD C 326BEE integrated amp. Here are some stats:

    2 x 50W Continuous Power into 4 ohms and 8 ohms
    100W, 150W, 200W IHF Dynamic power into 8, 4 and 2 ohms, respectively

Would they be underpowered with this? I was hoping to go with a budgeted, designated 2 channel, integrated amp so I wouldn't need a pre amp.

Also, Ill be posting new pics sometime within the next few weeks.

    Thanks

Looking great want to see that front baffle.

Drove mine with a SR7002, then XPA-5 and now with an XPA-2. They are nominal 4ohm and my SR7002 didn't like them. The XPA-5 no problem and the XPA-2 is effortless. Give them at least 100watts 4ohm real power.

Thanks for the suggestions. I basically want the most affordable way to power these and assumed an integrated amp may be the way to go.

Not sure the price of your integrated, but a XPA-2 & USP-1 can be had for $1250 and you will love the sound for the buck.

There are some good threads on this topic over on AVS

Short answer, is no you don't need a dedicated power amp unless your speakers are difficult to drive (mostly low impedance) and/or you want to play very loudly.

FWIW, Bass eats up a lot more power than mid/high freq.

If one of those threads doesn't answer your question I'll be happy to elaborate.

Here's a summary of the Dayton TMWW speakers:

I have spent hours trying to wrap my head around all the information contained on the 3-way WTMW / TMWW thread. It's extremely hard to extract the key information because of a number of reasons: most of the updated designs occur somewhere deep in the thread, and the first post has not been updated (example: It claims to have a

The upa-2 looks interesting. Would it be powerful enough for the TMWWs?

185 watts 4ohm if your not playing to extreme levels it will work fine. I use the UPA-2 for my Modula's, vary nice. If you can stretch the UPA-1's would also be nice. If your tight now start with the UPA-2, you can always trade up later. I haven't tried the UPA-2 with my TMWW's, I will give it a whirl this weekend and let you know.

I couldn't find any information from a quick perusal as to the efficiency or the impedance of the speakers. So it's hard to say.

How much hearing damage do you want to occur? Most AVRs can drive a reasonably efficient speaker to volume levels that will damage your hearing.

Once you get past the first couple of doublings 64 watts or 18 db (6 x 3db), the law of diminishing returns sets in with a vengeance. So most larger amps are only going to generate SPLs that are 3-6db at most higher. But the UPA-2 is probably no more than 3 db more powerful than your typical avr.

The bigger the amp the better able it is going to be at coping with HT or musical peaks. But peaks can be 15-20 db higher than the average listening level and that is 32-100 times as much power.

So I would just use the speakers for a while first.

If your AVR keeps going into protection or you are listening at levels where you are getting clipping, then I would look at an external amp. If you decide you REALLY have to have one, I would probably look at one of the pro amps (you'll see them mentioned a lot in subwoofer threads). Most of them can produce WAAAYYY more power (up to thousands of watts) than your typical consumer amp, for the same or even less money, but do have a couple of serious drawbacks.

                      1) They have noisy fans - This is the deal breaker for a lot of people. Now it is relatively easy to replace the fans with something much quieter, but you are voiding the warranty and many people don't trust themselves to make changes like this. If you can stick them some place out of sight or out of earshot, this is also less of an issue. Most people don't have that choice though.

                      2) They are BIG and UGLY - They might not fit or not fit easily in your equipment rack and generally have very low WAF.

No problem with the UPA-2 going to half on the dial will get you North of 110 db's. I wish I had the UPA-1's to try so I could compare to the XPA-2.

I use my TMWW's primarily for theater and their great, but when I compare them to my Modula MT XE's for music, I think I would attenuate the Seas tweet a couple db's. A good song for comparing is Jamie Woon's (Middle) track from Mirror Writing, there is lots of little plucks and under laying sounds of rain fall in there and to me the tweet sounds a little hot.

There was some discussion in the main thread regarding adjusting the L-pad but I don't think anyone actually described how to do it. If you haven't sealed up your xovers yet and want to do a little tweaking maybe one of these experts could describe how to adjust for this. I know I would pull a drive and change a resister or two to see. I do love the 27TBFC though and I think the UPA-2 will work fine.

ā€‹I finally finished these suckers. They're 90lbs each and came together really well. While they look good, they sound even better. Now I know how my music is supposed to sound. I will still build some feet and grills, but for now I just wanna listen to them!

Also, for the finish, I used some clear sanding sealer and 4 coats of Minwax semi-gloss polyurethane with sanding in between. No stain. I think they look glossier in the pics then in person. This might be because I applied the final 2 coats using a top-loading sprayer. I was glad I did this because the clear coat came out very even and with very little imperfections. I didn't wax them either.

They certainly have a presence, both visually and acoustically.

I hope you are still with us.
I know after I built the mini Statements, center and monitors I took a break from this sight to enjoy my efforts.
I really want to build a pair of these.
How can I get a template of the horizontal pieces, top, bottom, braces.
                                      Any help would be appreciated

Your speakers look great! Awesome finish. I love the baffle design that you came up with - I wish I would have thought of that when building my Statement Monitors.

Very nice indeed, what would be the final thickness of the curved wall?

The walls are 7/8 inches thick total. I used 2 sheets of bendable plywood, each 3/8 inches, and a layer of 1/8 inch thick HDF.

                                                      Vary well done!

I love the natural finish on the cherry. I liked the way you implemented the removable front baffle. I was thinking of making new cabs and tweaking the xovers for mine and I will defiantly apply your removable front. Thanks for the great build documentation and ideas.

I find more and more that I like the sanding sealer method for making the grain pop just the right amount, followed by a poly finish. I prefer the no stain methods as I want to appreciate the natural beauty of the veneer as much as possible.

Do you know the specific species of Cherry for your veneer? Its much less red than I'm used to seeing. Where did you get your veneer?

I got the cherry from oakwoodveneer.com. It was the the standard flat cut cherry sheet, a really great value for how nice they turned out.

These are unique and don't look like anything I have seen on the market. Try to compare and the prices are a lot higher, and I mean higher.
