    Txgrizzly Official SonoSub build thread - completed PICS and comments

    Ok,
    I am going to start the build on my Sub next week and have acquired most of the materials to start. I would like to thank everyone who helped me with my decision process on this stuff.

    Driver = Dayton 15" MKIII Titanic
    Amp = Bash 500w Plate Amp
    FBD = Behringer DSP1124p
    Tube = 20" sonotube
    End caps = 2 1/4 total thickness each
    Ports = 1ea 6" tube 2'10" long
    Total length of tube = 4' 9"
    Effective volume = 8.69 cu ft
    Tuning freq = 15 Hz
    Fill = good ole fiberglass insulation attached with spray contact cement.
    finish = endcaps will be gloss metalic black and the tube is going to be grey speaker carpet...

    Total Cost comes in around $650

    Once the parts come in i will put together a photo of all of it and a BOM. I am also going to try to document this build fairly well so maybe i can help out the next DIY'r like you guys have helped me...

    Here are pics of the raw materials and the beginning of the clamping. i also adding pics to a new reply due to space constraints.

    NEW UPDATE: 7/25/09
    I have completed the SUB and have added two completed pics to the three that were on this post. I would really like to thank everyone who has helped me with this endeavor and a special thanks to Thomas ;x( for answering all my noob questions.
    The sub sounds awesome :T and i am still tweaking it a little and i think it still needs some break in time. i pushed it a little hard right after getting it up and running and it hit its limit on the LF on the movie "war of the worlds" when the tripod comes out of the ground. i havent put the FBD in line on it yet so i should be able to get it even sounding better shortly. the thing really puts alot of low low freq's out. once i get the FBD inline and figure out how to use REW to check my room i should have all the LFE i will ever need.

    things i did wrong on this build:
    1. i didnt allow for the thickness of the carpet in the demensions of the baffles so they are not flush with the carpet. its not the prettiest but i can live with it.
    2. on the box i built to mount the plate amp i didnt take into account that the corner screws for the amp would fall on the joint of the MDF so i am unable to put screws in those holes even after pre drilling. it shouldnt affect anything though.
    3. tolerances on holes - i tried to keep some of the tolerances to tight and had to really work at getting the baffles seated in the tube and the driver hole in the baffle had to be messaged to allow me to put the driver in easier.

    I suggest you consider some form of bracing. The tube material thickness and bend aren't actually much per length of circumference. Since you're already cutting disks, count on at least two more. They should be placed at unequal locations along the tube. I would even build connectors between the disks. Obviously, the interior disks will need cutouts.

    Have you considered fiberglassing the interior?

      Hare, i thought the whole purpose of doing a tube was because of the strength and rigidity of that shape? i can add the inner donuts no problem but that will change my volume measurements a bit... the sonotube calculator i used didnt mention needing any mid span bracing.

        A 4' piece of 20" tube needs no bracing. All subs benefit from the addition of damping material

        2-4" ports don't flow as much air as one 6" port. I never seen a home center that didn't sell 6" PVC drain pipe.

        7yrs ago when I built Pete's sub it was fairly radical, overly large port and low tune. Were I building it today I'd tune it to 15Hz

        I thought Tube-Zilla looked pretty good with it's black wood and grey carpet

          thanks as always Thomas... i think i have found a place where i can get the 6" PVC. i will be getting some eggcrate damping for the interior...

            We used the rather $pendy 2.5" acoustic foam in Pete's tube because he didn't want to mess with fiberglass. Given it's coefficient of absorption fiberglass is one the best materials available for damping subs..

              yea i had heard that as well but they are right Fiberglass is a PITA. how would that 2" thick foam you can buy at walmart or Hobby store be for dampin? its the stuff they use to fill cushions with...

                Acoustic foam is a completely different animal from the stuff used for mattress pads or in furniture building, which is basically worthless for audio.

                This IMO is the best way to do a tube. It's R13 but some is peeled off to make it thinner...

                  Thanks Thomas...

                  Ok i guess i get itchy then... i cant tell from the pic but that is the paperless type of insulation correct? also what was used to glue it to the sides, just simple spray adhesive?

                    IIRC he peeled off the paper backing.

                    He used spray adhesive
                    i am nearing completion of my ported sonosub and have one question. is it a must to put some type of dampening or foam on the inside of the sonosub? what exactly is the gain from doing this? and can i get away without it? thanks for any help. also would the typical yellowish egg carton foam do anything?

                      quick question, what is the way everyone likes to mount the endcaps? i was thinking of using "gorilla Glue" which has very good binding qualities on various materials and also has a small amount of expansion to help fill gaps.

                        I've never tried Gorilla Glue on a tube sub. I've tried it on wooden boxes and don't like how it works.

                        There's a very thin plastic film (waterproofing) on the inside of most brands of tube. Some people go crazy peeling it off so as to be able to glue to the paper. I'm not that OCD...

                        I use siliconized latex caulk. A thin layer lubes edges of the wood to ease assembly. I tack things in place with a brad nailer. Then I put a thick bead on the inside where the wood meets the tube. You can see the inside edge is rounded over on my endcaps, that's to ease assembly and make a room for a nice fat bead of caulk.

                          I used wood glue for the top cap and no glue for the bottom should I need to get into the thing for any reason. And no it can not blow the tube off :rofl: But it does rock nicely.

                            thanks buggers, i have a plan in place and now i just need time to start the build. i have pics of the raw materials that i am going to add shortly. and then start adding the build pics as i go.

                                  update:
                                  I have cut the tube to length and installed the insulation damping, put the carpet on the exterior. I have cut to length and painted the inside of the port.
                                  i have the cut and primed the bottom, top baffle and the floor plate. i have also cut the plate amp box to mount to the side of the tube. i have the pics on the camera but i havent downloaded and edited them yet so they will fit on the site.
                                  This week as i have time i will finish painting the baffles and plate and then assemble everything. i should be listening to it later this week... sorry about not having any pics yet. i will get the added this week.

                                  ON A SIDE NOTE:
                                  When using MDF for your wood try using minwax wood hardener on it instead of the water and glue combo... it makes the wood very hard and sands to a fine finish. i am thinking this is going to make my finish a lot smoother....

                                  Pics of the plates cut out and primed in gray before going to their final color. also a couple pics of the port mounted in the top plate as well as a pic of the damping in the tube...

                                        Thanks Thomas, I have been running an idea around in my head...
                                        Would there be a benefit if I went ahead and applied acoustic damping to the outside of the port tube inside the enclosure? It’s a lot of solid surface area inside the sub.

                                            Given the passband where a sub operates there's no benefit to doing this.
