The old Universal Pictures original version of The Wolfman (1941) scared the living hell outta me the first time I saw it. And it still scares me today. The remake, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, is a pale version of the original. In fact, they've changed the story dramatically, and although they were able to capture some of the atmosphere of the original, they failed miserably when it comes to the "scare factor". Hell, it just isn't scary. Lon Chaney's original wolfman appearance made your skin scrawl, but Del Toro's makeup made him look like a cute teddy bear. And when he leaps and bounds around like a crazed rabbit... well what can I say. If you are not familiar with the original, you will likely be happy with this version. For me, I'm just glad I only rented it. Sorry, but i just can't recommend it for fans of the original.

Thanks for the heads-up George. I too love the Lon Chaney original, but am still interested in the remake if for nothing else than to watch Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins together. I do want to see how the special effects were carried out..

Worth it for that, Tex. But I believe you'll be disappointed in Anthony Hopkins. He appeared to be bored throughout. And you'll probably find the special effects wanting as well. Shame, really. They really could have done something here that would have improved on the original, but they just missed the boat completely.Originally posted by David MeekThanks for the heads-up George. The remake has pretty much the same storyline as the original ( family stuck in the desert and attacked by strange beings) but with a little embellishment. What I didn't like about the remake was the excessive gore. Anyway, I just rented it to see how it compared to the original ( which I have in my...-

In the original 1984 release, we had a nasty Rutger Hauer as the tormentor and C. Thomas Howell as the tormented. Jennifer Jason Leigh played the girl who eventually sympathizes with Howell's plight and ends up paying a high price. This was pretty good for its time and I feel it should have been left...-

Anyway, the original Straw Dogs was directed by Sam Peckinpah and starred Dustin Hoffman. It was pretty violent and quite disturbing when I first saw it. But I like Peckinpah's work and got over the disturbing stuff. I have it in my dvd collection and have watched it several...
