    300 worth a buy

I got it as a "release day only " special price and I'm glad I bought it.

Most probably know the story about how 300 Spartans faced unsurmountable odds against the Persians, whose army was so large the earth rumbled when they moved. I also own the earlier version released in 1962, and although the story is the same, the presentation couldn't be more different. This new version is by that Sin City guy and the look is the same. So not only is this version a feast for the eyes, it will drive your subwoofer to the limits during its nearly 2 hours of non-stop action. This is definitely a keeper you will want to watch again and again.

    A big :T

I agree George, I bought the Blu-ray version of this disc and watched it last night via the PS3, and it certainly is a repeater movie. Blu-ray video transfer is satisfactory, however the audio transfer is outstanding. I also heard the HD-DVD version has a better video transfer and more special features than it's Blu-ray counterpart.

June, it most certainly rocked my system.

      Peace and blessings,

      Azeke

I saw this in the cinema and it was superb. I can't wait until it's released over here. I bought Sin City the day it was released and I've watched it about 5 times. I bought the graphic novels of them both too. Neat if you like that kind of thing.

Watched this movie twice since yesterday. Once at work while enjoying what a good plasma setup can do, and just an hour ago at home while enjoying what a good audio system can do. This movie is so bad ass! I enjoyed the movie a lot that I didn't pay that much attention to the audio video. But I think watching it at home was more of a pleasure because of one particular audio section: the audio during the slow action scenes really had so much detail with my B&Ws. From the spears swooshing throw the air, the clinging of shields falling and swords clashing,... the slow motion parts are awesome for audio!

Yeah, this dvd will likely end up being a favorite for showing off your system.

i am fairly disappointed with the video quality at least as my setup goes. i loved the movie but i noticed a significant issue with the picture. no matter what i do it seems as thought there is a mosquito effect on the characters skin and some rock surfaces. i have a samsung hls5088w 1080p dlp tv but im using an xbox for video playback. im using the same component cables ive been using for over 2 years and every other dvd i use looks superb. is there something special about the cinematography of the movie? anything besides buying a new dvd player that i can try?

Oh, yes, you will find the movie has a grainy look and this was filmed that way intentionally. It has that " grahpic novel " look the same as this fellow's previous film based on a graphic novel called SIN CITY. If everything else looks good on your display you don't have a problem as far as I am concerned. It's the source.

The video is highly stylized and made to look somewhat grainy. The colors are also adjusted to give it a certain look. However, it is full of action and the audio is excellent. Its still a good movie for home theater and fun to watch.

I watched 300 on Saturday, thought it was entertaining enough, but I personally thought the style overweighed the movie. I think it was generally ok to good, if you’re a fan of the style very good, if you’re not a fan of the style Ok at best.

First of all, visually, I’m not a fan of this style in general and there was too much black for me, I prefer more detail, I must stay that what was detailed looked pretty good. A question I have is, with the blackout styling, is it for effect or to cut down on the money and effort it would cost to detail everything out?

Sound was pretty good, at one point my wife mention she felt like she needed to swat a fly away. Lot of rumbling and deeps sound kept sub busy.

I really liked the story. What caught my attention and fascination the most was the concept of the uniqueness of the different armies of the different nations under the Persians. They were uniquely and impressively represented, I would have like more of that. Also, the seamier side of the Persians was very detailed \ visually appealing.

I was a little suspect regarding the presented Spartan “values” and then the conflict between the Queen and counsel – counselor. I guess every society has it’s challenges.

I thought it to be a bit in the Mel Gibson vein of historical movies (Passion Of The Christ and Apocalypto). If it would have been more conventional in its look and feel, it would have seemed of a similar mold.

Not sure how many replays it would get at my house, so as far as purchasing, I will probably wait till the $6.99 or lower price point if I do decide to buy.

I'm not really a fan of that grapic novel style either, but I can take it in small doses.

I thought it was absolutely fantastic!
Frankly, the less like Hollywood and ‘Mel’ the better, IMHO.
It was different, fresh and exciting.
I also liked Sin City for all the same reasons.

Guess I'm in the minority, but I wasn't all that impressed. The visual style was different and interesting, but I found the movie actually plodded along and the constant references to "free Greeks" a bit disingenuous--considering the sizable slave population of ancient Greece. Still, it does have interesting visuals and a good soundtrack, but not one I'd ordinarily buy. However, as I am an historian whose research field includes historical feature films (some more loosely associated with history than others), I'll likely pick up a used copy to add to my historical film collection. Perhaps I'll be inspired to write an article about it some day. However, without that work-related element, I doubt I'd go back to the well again on this one.
