The Hills Have Eyes the remake

The remake has pretty much the same storyline as the original ( family stuck in the desert and attacked by strange beings) but with a little embellishment. What I didn't like about the remake was the excessive gore. Anyway, I just rented it to see how it compared to the original ( which I have in my collection ) and I'm satisfied that the original was the better.

Isn't it surprising how often that is true?

I enjoyed the remake. Really didn't have a problem with the gore. Though, I was unaware, this was a remake. I'll have to rent the oringinal now.

The original was released in 1977. It was written and directed by Wes Craven. I noticed his name in the credits on the remake but forget what his involvement was. Perhaps just credit for the original story. He didn't direct the remake. One of the interesting things about the original is that one of the main Hills characters ( James Whitworth, I believe ) plays the role without makeup. How you see him is actually how he looks.

Anchor bay released a special 2 disc edition in 2003 or 2004 with both a DD 5.1 and a DTS audio track.

          Straw Dogs remake
          by George Bellefontaine
Dear God, another remake. Anyway, the original Straw Dogs was directed by Sam Peckinpah and starred Dustin Hoffman. It was pretty violent and quite disturbing when I first saw it. But I like Peckinpah's work and got over the disturbing stuff. I have it in my dvd collection and have watched it several...

Wicker Man, The Sentinel, and Akeelah

These were the three films I rented for this three day weekend.

I'll start with the Sentinel. This film didn't really do it for me. It's okay, but I didn't get nearly as much of a rise out of it as I do from the series 24, although Kiefer Sutherland plays a similar type role to that...

Flight of the Phoenix- The Remake

FYI: This is the remake to a 1965 Jimmy Stewart movie which is also available now for $10.

Dennis Quaid is a pilot sent to Mongolia to do an evacuation. The plane crashes and the story pretty much revolves around their rescue or attempts to rescue themselves. The success of this is going...

          The Wolfman/the remake
          by George Bellefontaine
The old Universal Pictures original version of The Wolfman (1941) scared the living hell outta me the first time I saw it. And it still scares me today. The remake, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, is a pale version of the original. In fact, they've changed the story dramatically, and...

          The Hitcher... the remake
          by George Bellefontaine
In the original 1984 release, we had a nasty Rutger Hauer as the tormentor and C. Thomas Howell as the tormented. Jennifer Jason Leigh played the girl who eventually sympathizes with Howell's plight and ends up paying a high price. This was pretty good for its time and I feel it should have been left...
