    ANNAPOLIS has its moments

The film stars James Franco ( he played, and even looks like, James Dean ) and Tyrese Gibson. Franco is a young kid from a bluecollar family. He works at the local shipyard but his dead mom always wanted him to go to Annapolis, so he tries and gets his chance to attend. As a "plebe" things are tough, and at first Franco resists help and goes it alone, but later changes and becomes more of a team player. Through it all, midshipman Tyrese Gibson goes all out to test Franco's mettle and a growing hatred for the midshipman sees Franco join the boxing team to get a crack at Gibson, the reigning champ. When all is said and done, Franco finally discovers what Annapolis is really all about and he is a better man for it.

There's not a lot of action in this film, save for some darn good boxing sequences, but the story is pretty good and the 103 minutes goes by quickly. This is similar to An Officer And A Gentleman, so if you liked that film, you will probably like Annapolis. Franco's not a bad actor, but Gibson was tops as the tough midshipman.
PQ and sound is quite good. When punches are being landed during the fight scenes, you can almost feel them. More low end than you'd expect, too.

A pretty good rental for me, well worth :3:

He DOES look like James Dean, doesn't he? I'd avoided this one as just a knock-off of An Officer And A Gentleman, but with your approval of it George I'm going to keep an eye out for it.

The similiarity to Officer And A Gentleman is there, but there were things about it diffefrent enough to make it enjoyable, Tex. I think you may like it.

            Officer Down
            by George Bellefontaine
I like cop movies but it irritates the hell out of me that so many of them are about dirty cops. In Officer Down, Stephen Dorff was a dirty cop who, after being shot and having his life saved by an unknown man who came to his aid , tries to make good with his second chance. But when that unknown helper...

Thank goodness director Randall Wallace didn't feel the need for going with that overdone blue filter and gave us some of the scariest war battle scenes shot in natural sunlight and darkness. There was a bit a slow-motion action...

            What fun!

With a tagline of "It's not like they didn't warn us!" (courtesy of IMDB) this movie is a throw-back to the days of Alfred Hitchcock - a throw-back to the time when suspense, inuendo, tiny fleeting glimpses
