RSP-1066 and Definitive Technology

I have the 1066 processor along with DefTech BP2006's for my mains and should i set these speakers to large or small? which setting would give me the most accurate sound from both 5.1 and 2ch sources? i'm new to this site so could someone please help?

Welcome to Club Rotel.

A couple of questions:

1) Are you running a sub?

2) Provide the specs of your speakers. I believe the 2006's have an 8" woofer @ 250W.

I am familiar with your plight, I have experimented back and forth on setting my speakers from small to large. I also own bipolars (Mirage OM-7 fronts, Def Tech rears) and I find that setting all my speakers to small works best for me, but of course I'm running a separate sub.

You may want to experiment, after all it's what matters to you that counts. I have been tweaking for several months with my current configuration and I always seem to find something else in the menu that helps.

You first must ensure that your speakers are calibrated and the delays are properly set, before you proceed, then experiment with the crossovers. The slightest adjustments in the menus or speaker placement (bipolar speakers need room to breath) can have an impact.

The other thing you may want to consider is upgrading your front channel amp, this provided, for me at least, an acoustical upgrade to my fronts (RB-1080).

Your mileage of course may vary.

I'm sure other's will offer their experiences.

If you dont have a seperate sub then I would definately set them to large. If you do have a seperate sub then try both ways to see which you like better. When you have powered towers this really comes down to personal preferences, let me explain...

I had Def Tech powered towers and felt that setting them to small was wasting the built in subs. Granted I didnt have a seperate sub so I basically had to set them to large to get the .1 on DVD's. Even if I did have a seperate sub I would still set them to large. Otherwise why not just get the non-powered veriosn and save some money.

Now a lot of people will say just about every speaker, regardless of its low end capability should be set to small. I find this to be rather odd. If thats an absolute (its not but for sake of arguement lets say it is - many internet forum posts swear by setting speakers to small) then why do companies make speakers with any output below the typical 80hz cutoff? Take the BP7000sc/7001sc for example that have the built in Supercubes, those should be set to small??? From my understanding movie soundtracks are mixed with the 80hz cutoff but if you capable mains why not utlizile them to the fullest.

Like I said, its a factor of couple of things where personal preference should rule the day. If you dont have a seperate sub then its an easy decision. For me, I like music in pure 2 channel analog stereo and Def Tech powered towers are perfect for that, plenty of low end that can get by without a sub (especially if you have the larger models). Also, the pre/pro, receiver, amp all play a factor into this as well. If the amps are not up to the challenge of running speakers on large then this could also make the decision easy.

Thats just my feeling. Trying both ways is the only true way to know what works best on your system.

Read every review on a Def Tech powered speaker and they all say the speaker must be run on large to get the full benefit from the built-in subwoofers.

i got the DefTech's for performance as well as aesthetics. it saves room for subs and plus i can have low end sound from every direction of the room w/powered subs in the center channel as well as the rears. thank you for your expertise, it sounds like you really know your stuff; moreso than I.
