    Didn't I have a scare this morning

    Hi guys,

So I went and ordered a cable from Rotel to do the firmware upgrade on my RSP-1066 (BTW, they charged me USD $30.00, no matter how hard I tried to get the cable for free ). UPS brought me the cable this morning. Happy and excited, I printed the instructions and connected the cable to my laptop and the back of the RSP-1066. Did all the setting outlined in the instructions, took the cover off of the dip switches and set them to on position.

I then turn the unit on and started to upload the firmware from laptop to RSP-1066. One thing I didn't do was to plug the laptop AC adapter in and therefore I was running on the battery. Guess what, after about 5 minutes or so, laptop went to standby. Now I am starting to sweat a little. Turned the laptop on again, plug the AC adapter and it seemed it just continued to upload the remainder of the firmware to RSP-1066 (I was getting the ...........).

Finished the download and got the download OK message on the computer, turned the unit off, unplug the cable and set the dipswitch to off position.

Tried to turn the unit on, nada, nothing, it was completely dead  Now I am really sweating, since I am thinking that I killed my RSP-1066 and also that I am sure that I will never hear the end of it from our beloved member ZX 6R remembering the virus issue (long story on that one too).

With trembling hands I reconnected everything and started the procedure again. First good sign was the fact that there was a connection between the RSP-1066 and my laptop. Second good sign, it seemed that the laptop was uploading the firmware. Sat there for almost 25 agonizing minutes (man it takes a while to upload firmware), finished the upload, turned RSP-1066 off, unplug the cable and set the dip switches to off.

UNIT TURNED ON . At that moment, I started dancing around my living room. I then held the mute button and saw 2.2.5 on the front display.

I am happy to report that the unit is working fine (hear that ZX 6R) and I don't know if I am imagining this, but it sounds better h: Probably it is the post mortem successful firmware effect

    Thanks,
    Maziar

I am glad to hear of your luck. Let me ask you...I am considering buying a 1066. How much are they? Will I need to update like you did when I buy one?

They are around CDN $2200.00 (I live in Canada and it should be less in US).

Firmware updates, will not change the sound of the unit (I was joking about the sound improvement in my last post). They just change certain settings on the processor. Usually the units have a stable firmware when you buy them and some people will never upgrade the firmware. I am one of those that has the updating bug. If you don't like to do it yourself, your retailer should be able to do it for you (and they don’t usually charge for that service). It really isn't that hard to do either just make sure that your computer won't got to standby in the middle of it.

As for the quality of the unit, IMO, they are one of the best sounding pre-pro in there price range for both movie and music.

        Thanks,
        Maziar

Plus there is just a certain amount of personal satisfaction in doing your own upgrade. Even more if you build your own cable and it works 8) I'm such a geek.

I know ZX 6R, that you guys would have done it for me. You guys have always been helpful and IMO, you are the best dealer in town. I just wanted to see if I can do it myself and also, I just didn't feel like unplugging all the cables and bringing it to the shop. Too many cables, and as you know, every time I unplug them, I always get the direction of the cables wrong when plugging them back again ops: And also you are right Mark about the satisfaction part. I didn't make the cables myself (too lazy), but I think the satisfaction was there since I thought I killed the unit 8O

Finally it was fun to do as well, even though it made me sweat a little

8O I hope that was your after tax price!!

                I paid 1900 taxes included for my 1066 and I'm in T.O.

                  No that was before taxes.

But I deal with a retailer that will provide upgrading. When the 1098 is out, I will take this unit back, be charged 2%/month for the time I had the unit and use the rest towards 1098.

I have dealt with the same retailer for the past 10 years or so. They do not provide any discount on their products and they charge MSRP (and that is the same for all their clients), but they provide excellent customer service and upgrading program. IMO, it is worth the extra $.

ZX 6R, feel free to add any coments.

                        Hi!

As I still have my RSX1055, I'm really pissed off by the fact that Rotel haven't provided a firmware update since 2003 (V1.50/2.26)!! I remember a thread on this forum listing a whole lot of issues/bugs about the 1055/1066 that we hoped would get fixed in a firmware update, but I...

                        Hello,
I recently purchased an RC-1570 pre-amp as a replacement for a RC-972 in a stack of 2 channel Rotel gear. Before placing into service, I was persuaded to provide the ability to spin some vinyl at the beach with some college friends, so for the time being it is feeding some KRKs and a REL...

Does someone have some kind of manual, or written down the steps?
I would be very grateful if someone could help me.

After months of waiting I just picked up my 1066, and 1095. Both are in Black. I couldnt' wait, and opened up the boxes. To my delight, the 1066 unit that I received came with the RR1050 Remote (whats the difference from the 969 - other than no flip cards?), and a firmware update cord. Powered up the...
