    Rotel RC-1090 preamp Humming

I have a rotel RC-1090 preamp that hums by just being plugged in, nothing is connected to it, whether it's on or off it still has a moderate hum. has anyone came across this problem and was done to fix it. Thanks

For clarification, the transformer inside the unit is humming correct? No speakers or amp hoked up?

If so, we've seen it before with not so great power. Might need to try another outlet or get a conditioner.

DC offset of as little as a couple hundred mVDC on the AC mains can cause transformers to hum or buzz, but that is more prevalent with larger size transformers like those in amplifiers, versus the smaller sizes found in preamps and source components. I would check the home for possible sources of DC (ceiling fan speed contols, heating temperature controls of any kind, light dimmers, halogen lights, etc.). These devices often employ diodes or silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs or thyristors), which draw current only on 1/2 of the AC sinewave, creating the DC offset. If that is not the problem, the transformer could have a loose mounting bolt or loose lamination(s). The RC-1090, once plugged in, is fully powered up and only in standby. The "on/off" switch only mutes/unmutes the output.

When it's on there's a moderate hum when I turn it off the hum sounds a little lower, When I connect a source to it it sounds beautiful. no hum through the speakers.

                Humming problem
                by dannyp
I have a RDA-975 hooked up to a RSP-980. Any time that the RDA-975 detects a 5.1 signal it hums through the speakers. It gets pretty bad when the volume hits 11:00.
If I turn the volume down the hum goes away. Or at least you can't hear it. But in stereo mode it isn't buzzing?

                Sunfire Mark VI Humming noise
                by Motox29
I have just installed a sunfire mark iv and can not get rid of the humming noise. I will not allow the sub to shut down. I have tried using the same ac plug as my receiver and several differnt rca cables all high quality. I have installed a monster cable sub block on the ac wall plug but still the sub...

                Rotel RB 1080/RC1090/Turntable....Out standing!
                by rantzmar
I dont post much here, but just want to say I am very very pleased with the Rotel outfit 1080/1090 amp and preamp. And especially now if any one is looking for a very nice two channel system on the cheap this is one of the better ways to go. You may find both at Audiogon if you watch daily.

                Amp and PreAmp- which one?
                by sugarmedia
                Hi guys...

I've pretty much decided that I will go with the Martin Logan Aeon-i speakers and need a good amp and pre amp.

Can anyone give m some suggestions of what I can look for that will pair well with these?

My dealer suggested the following from Rotel:...

                What preamp would you pick?
                by mattburk
I am putting together a two channel system & am in need of a preamp.
                Here are the contenders:
Some of these I could not hear locally, and none in a a/b comparision. I would like to at least lower the number of preamps I am looking at.
