Rotel 1565 power cord issue

Quick question. What is the best way to secure the power cord in the socket of my Rotel RMB 1565 amp? Everytime I need to move my cabinet the power cord seems to lose contact with the socket and the amp shuts off. I'm finding I need to turn off the amp, and then reach in and push it in to get a good fit. Then turn it back on again.

Would Rotel be able to send me another power cord to resolve this issue?Is it a bad power cord. My power cord on my RSP 1570 did the same thing. I use an AudioQuest NRG 2 power cord. It gets annoying afterwhile and I get nervous everytime it goes out thinking it may do some damage to the inside of the amp.

Any assistance appreciated.

RoMan, I don't know where you are, but you could try another one from say Radio Shack or something. Rotel uses a standard IEC power cord. Perhaps a different one would fit a little tighter.

Doh, just re-read that you're using a AudioQuest NRG 2 power cord. Try wrapping a half turn of black insulating tape around the Rotel end, and see if it fits more snuggly.

RoMan, you could also try retrofitting with a Furutech FI-15(G) IEC plug. In my experience these provide a tighter grip and fit. It is also their least expensive model you will find, in the $35-$40 range. Acoustic Sounds has it at the lowest price (see link). Be cautious of fakes if searching for a bargain, particularly on eBay.

Many aftermarket power cords have larger, heavier IEC plugs and heavier, stiffer cable than stock and exert a lot more leverage to unseat themselves when the component or cord is moved.

I prefer to use Teflon plumber's tape versus electrical tape as a wrap as I find it allows for smoother insertion and has no adhesive residue. Because it's thinner, it's easier to get the exact thickness required as well as being able to taper the thickness for easier insertion.

PS: I forgot to mention earlier, repeated making and breaking of contact between the pins/prongs of the power cord IEC plug and power inlet, even when in standby, can cause burning and pitting from arcing. The arcing is the result of back EMF. Each time an inductor (e.g. the power transformer) is energized/de-energized, the establishment/collapse of the magnetic field causes an electromotive force (EMF) to appear across its coil. Any metal contacts in the circuit with that inductor will experience arcing from the EMF.

Thanks everybody for the informative responses. Much appreciated. MJB- Just to clarify I am using the AQ NRG 2 1m power cord on my RSP 1570. It is a short run as my power conditioner is on the top shelf on my main system. The one I'm referring too is in my bedroom.

I emailed Rotel yesterday as well. They are going to send me a new power cord. See if this does the trick.

Thanks for tips Glen B and srb. Let's just say at this point my power amp is still working well considering the minor setback but I do want to prevent this type of thing from happening in the future. I may consider looking at purchasing new IEC cords for all my gear and maybe even some Teflon tape as well. I appreciate all the tips and information so far Club Rotel members.
