Newbie picking up 1058 - What to look for?

I am picking up my first rotel product tomorrow, a 1058 and am very excited but nervous. All of the HDMI business is aggravating right now with mid-fi (?) companies, but I don't really want to wait any longer to upgrade from my cheap yamaha receiver running my B&W 600 series 5.1 system.

It looks like the 1058 supports at a minimum the HDMI features I want and has a video scaler (more on that below) so I pulled the trigger on the purchase, valuing audio quality over features (a marantz, pio elite, etc would have cost a lot less, meaning I valued that perceived quality a lot). There seems to be discrepancies on the net about the 1058's multichannel audio processing capabilities (bass management and speaker settings being the ones I only really care about). So those are first things I want to test with the unit.

Which leads me to my problem: I am in the middle of an "extended move," and don't really have access to my 1080p sony sxrd tv. I will be testing the HDMI features at my friend's ht (same tv) this weekend. The tv has a weak analog scaler so that will be another feature of the 1058 I will be evaluating. My unit was sold (at the recommendation of a rotel rep talking to my dealer) with HDMI video bypass, meaning no processing of video on the hdmi inputs, so I will test this as well. (On a side note I felt like I was buying a car instead of a piece of electronics, from the choice in features (well 1 feature), finish and the final negotiation in the price).

Is there anything else you all are wondering about the 1058 that I can test? I will be using my friend's ps3 as a source, a cable box, my laptop (dvi>hdmi) and maybe an apple tv. I won't have access to my tv for a few months so must do this stuff this weekend.

Also, the lack of headphone output was a slight problem for me as I live with roommates and like to use them late at night to not disturb the others. I bought a cheap ($50) headphone distribution amp (4 outputs with independent controls) as I don't have expensive headphones and sometimes watch late at night with a friend or two. I will run this off the second zone (meaning RCAs connections all around in addition to digital). What do you all think about this solution?

Overall I am really excited about my purchase. I am hoping my B&W's really come alive with the rotel amps. Honestly I am afraid I might have over-purchased as I only have the 600 series 3 (602 mains, lcr600 center, 600 rears and the smaller sub). I also feel that buying Rotel might be a bit cliche with B&W, considering the ownership of the former by the latter.

    Sorry for the long post!

Sorry Skaymakca, I just returned mine last week. Got tired of the HDMI issues and the functionality of it. I was back there picking up a rotel amp and the rep was there and I mentioned I just brought back my 1058 I mentiond that I kept waiting for a software fix but there was none. He said he knew of the problem and Japan just figured it out. Unfortunately the only fix is a hardware fix as software will not take care of the problem. Good luck

I returned mine as well (a few hours before you posted). HDMI issues were apparent and the video scalar had worse quality than my tv's and I began to think there was little value to me over the 1057. But on top of the tech features not working right the receiver's core function had issues, the right rear channel had a noisy amp: changing volume resulted in a buzz/sound out of that channel, and in stereo mode I could distinctly hear the sound faintly coming out of that channel as well. There was also a minor cosmetic issue out of the box as well, a scratched LCD. I was not impressed to say the least. I had other minor design and performance quibbles as well. I returned my unit and am going to look at other brands at my dealer.

1058 HDMI audio shutting off when proj is on.
        by Johan Hendrix
I have a problem with my RSX-1058 and audio over HDMI. When I switch on my projector, sound is turned off. When I switch my projector off or to a non-HDMI input, I have sound again. It looks as if my projector (Pana PT-AE2000) tells the other components that it does not use the sound signal, and that...

        RSX 1058 HDMI Video Bypass?
        by dolfan
I have an RSX 1058 receiver. The picture on my TV is better running direct from my Directv receiver via HDMI. Is there a bypass so that the picture will stay as good as going direct to the TV. I set the HDMI bypass in the menu to yes but it still looks better not hooked to the receiver. There is nothing...

        Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if someone could tell me the difference between the 1057 and 1058? I know there is more HDMI's, Optical's and more 12v remotes just wondering if there is anything else? Is there any audio quality difference?

I also read that the 1058 HDMI...

I have a Xbox360 connected to my RX-1058, via HDMI. I have a full HD projector connected via HDMI. This setup works fine.

Is it possible to optionally switch the video output to composite video out? I watch a lot of movies and dont always want to use my projector.

        thanks,...
