    am i wasting my money?

hi all. i have a pair of BW 685. they sound wonderful and better than i expected. And, recently, i ordered a RB1080 and RC-1082 to replace my old receiver. ofcourse, they are far better than the receiver. But, i feel so guilty that i use a pair of $2100 pre/pro to power a pair of $600 speakers.

am i wasting my money on the amplifieers? should i downgrade them to an integrated or downgrade the RC1082 to RC1070? upgrading speakers is not possible now.

    need your opinions. thanks.

If you're into a lot of music, keep the RC-1082 and play around with the rest.

I'm driving a pair of 804S with a Rotel RA-1062 and it sounds amazingly good. There was no way of reliably telling apart the RA-1062 from a combo or RC-1070 and RB-1072 at our listening volume levels (blind ab at the dealer) - and I'm good at hearing details!

The thing is: speaker will do waaaaayyyy more to the sound than an amplifier will. I'll probably update sooner or later to something else, but I will do ab testing and only upgrade if I can clearly make out a difference.

E.g. I love the cool look of the Classé CAP-2100 and the CDP-102 but I will look VERY closely wether they are worth a price about 5 times more of what I paid for the RA-1062 with the RCD-1072.

So, the only thing I can recommend: Trust only your own ears. Can you hear a difference? If yes, what is better? Try a blind test. A dealer that trusts his gear will set it up for you than you can compare and if you don't hear a difference, get the cheaper one and spent the rest on speaker or music.

          thanks for all your reply.

i just came up with another solution: trade in my 685 with a 805S and buy a RA1062. i think that will improve more than RB-1080/RC-1082 & 685 combo. :T

Yeah, certainly. The 805s is a fantastic speaker and the RA-1062 is a good and solid little amplifier. More powerful than expected after reading the specs.

As long as you are not searching for "loud" and "lots of whumm" you'll be very happy with that combination, I'm absolutely sure about that. Just keep the upgrade path open ... ;-)

He said keep your electronics as when you go to upgrade all you'll need to upgrade are the speakers as you'll have high end electronics already.

Why not get the Rotel 1062 amp and leave it at that?

Of course this is a simplistic response as I have no idea what sort of sound you are currently getting, what sort of improvements you want to achieve, how far you want to go ultimately with your hifi. Your old receiver may already give 80 to 90 % of a 1062s performance.

If I was looking to run a pair of 685s I would get myself a Rotel 1062 or better amp (if I didn't already have an amp of this quality) and use it with the Rotel 1072 CD player. If computer audio was my thing I would spend the CD player money on a DAC. Then I would get some silver interconnects and good speaker cable costing, it total, about half of what I spent on the CD player (Cat Cables may provide better value). I would also get myself some decent stands for the speakers- something solid and heavy.

I would then look at my room for any glaring issues - hard surfaces that need to be softened with a wall hanging to avoid harsh reflect highs, location of open doorways and corridors etc that may take some of the energy out of the sound. I would experiment with the practical and the odd impartical option until I was happy.

options - you could happily replace the Rotel amp with a tube amp from Cayin or Jas - up to double the price of the Rotel but you may discover a love of tubes that you never knew you had.
                    Mac 8gb SSD Audirvana ->Weiss INT202 firewire interface ->Naim DAC & XPS2 DR->Conrad Johnson CT5 & LP70S-> Vivid B1s. Nordost Valhalla cables & resonance management. (Still waiting for Paul Hynes PS:M)
                    Siamese

I'd get the RC-1082 and either an RB-1080 or an RB-1070 and upgrade the speakers later. The 805S's will really show off better electronics down the road and make your 685's sing. The RA-1062 is a great integrated amp for the money and I know you'd like it, but the RC-1082 with one the two amps is better. It's more open and has a better sense of pace and detail in the bass.

If you're building a system in stages (like most of us) , I'd pick somewhere to start. If you have good electronics (you do) save up for speakers that are even better. That way you'll get every bit from your source and be ready for the next elec. upgrade. Sort of a leapfrog approach-and built in motivation for upgradeitis , IMO.

but, i think most of you missed one word "i orederd". i havent got the RB-1080/RC1082 in hand yet. i think i can cancel the order and go into another direction which might be Ra-1062 and BW805s(sell the 685).
what i have in hand right now is a pair of 685 and my old receiver(not very bad, 120w onkyo). some of you suggest me to go for the RB1080/RC1082 & 685combo. in this way i will save almost $800. but i believe that my second upgrade option will probably improve more than that. not sure i am right or not.
