Leave system on or turn off - Which?

I have for an amp an Anrthem MC 20 and for a preamp a Rotel RC 1070. It is a two channel stereo system. My question: Should the system be left on or should it be turned off after each use? JNorth1178

Aussie Geoff here - I've renamed your post as a title of "Which?" is meaningless and will not get an answer... Please try and come up with titles that describe the issue or question (even a little!)

    Hi!

I personally turn everything off, I don't like devices that stay stand-by for nothing.

I use the main switch of my power conditioner that turn everything off.

Save some money every year too.

Thanks Aussie. I'm new at this. I thought maybe turning your system on and off so frequently would be stressful and might cause early burn-outs.

I personally leave everything on standby after switching off my processor with a 12 V trigger!! If I leave the country on a 5 day trip for example.. then, YES ,I would switch off everything from the main.
My way ,and my opinion only, mind you!!
        Cheers

I personally leave my amps, CD player, DAC and preamp/processor on. The only things that I power down are my DVD player and TV (both go into standby mode). All gear is plugged into a Panamax line conditioner that remains on.

Regarding the amps, I remember reading something way back about it being a bit detrimental to have the component go from a cold state to warm and back again numerous times in addition to the time it takes for the gear to warm up and perform optimally. I'll have to find out where I read that. As far as electricity consumption goes, I was away for a week a few years back and I turned all my gear off. I compared that week to a week where all the gear was on. It was like a $1 difference. So, I guess it's worth $52/year to me to have my gear working optimally any time I want to use it.

          Just my $0.02...

A quick Google search yield the following information on this topic:

"It is true that most electronic components go through a brief period of chaos when turned off and on, when the voltages and such arent balanced, its a prime time for things to break and components to wear, however... you have to balance that against the cost of the electricity, and the type of equipment.

If you turn your equipment off religously between uses, you can save a couple hundred bucks in electricity over the course of its lifetime. And if none of that equipement breaks due to Power-on issues, then your ahead of the game, economically speaking. And there IS A very good chance that nothing will break, especially with transitor-based stuff. And, if something breaks after 4 years, is that always a bad thing? Electronics do tend to improve over time, so replacing an item that breaks can bring joy as well.

Also, if your equipment is stuck in a poorly cooled enterainment center, it could wear on your equipment more to leave it on. Also, you have to factor in other economic issues, like in the wintertime, Im less concerned with turning my equipment off at night, because its a heat source. In the summertime, I turn it off quickly, because its a heat source."

              Turn off amps in RSX-1056?
              by kirkj
New to the forum (and having problems posting too?).

I picked up an RSX-1056 and have some questions. I'm going to use the 1056 for home theatre with a 5.1 B&W VM1 system that I ordered. However, I also like to listen to 2-channel music using an Adcom amp and a pair of Magneplanars...

Can't turn off RSX 1056 with my remote
              by andrew555
In some instances when I press the off button on the remote to turn off the RSX 1056 the unit wont turn off. When I then press the reset button on the remote and press the off button again the unit turns off. Any ideas why it wont turn off in the first instance?

              by suyver
              Hi guys!

I have a Rotel 1066 pre-amp. I know that I can turn off the display by pressing the 'Menu' button on the remote control for a few seconds. But everytime that I switch the pre-amp off and on, the display comes back on again! Is there a way to switch it off permanently (other than...

Can you turn off the front display on an RDV 1060?
              by Cracking Oboe
              Hi all,

One feature I really like on my RSP 1068 is that I can turn off the front display by holding down the menu button . I have been entertaining the idea of purchasing an RDV 1060. Can anyone tell me if the RDV 1060 (or any Rotel DVD player) has a defeatable front display? Actually,...
