Component video cables into receiver or tv?

Hi, I was wondering if there is a preferred method of connecting the componet video cables. Should I connect them into the receiver or directly into the TV. Is there any benefit of doing either?

I plan on buying the rsp 1068 soon.

And to verify, using component video cables is the preferred method over using an s-cable right?

Forgive me but I am new to video, I have been mainly a stereo guy, but trying to correct that shortcoming :B

Yes, component is better than S-video.

You can do it either way, you can look at it two ways...

One, connect them directly to the TV, this eliminates the possiblity of any signal repeat or interference the RSP-1068 would/might cause to the picture (though I've never heard of this happening). This works if you have enough Component connections on the TV for all your devices.

Two, connect all (or some) of the devices into the RSP-1068 and RSP-1068 to the TV through one connection. This saves you from having to swap both the TV and processor to change components as the processor will change both video and audio at the same time. Since the throughput of the 1068 is high enough for HDTV transmission there should be "virtually" no quality loss to the signal. I have it this way as my TV only has one or two component connections, can't remember, but I need to use the RSP-1098 for all my connections.

To be honest I've hook my DVD player up both ways and did not notice any difference in picture quality running it through the 1098...so I just let everything go through my 1098 and it makes switching sources a snap.

But either way will work...just depends on your preferences.

Note: Option 2 will require an aditional set of cables.

Thank you very much for the response. So if I didnt watn to spend the money on additional cables and I dont have a lot of video devices (I only have a DVD player) then I could directly to the TV for the video part and connect the audio to the rsp for the surround sound audio.

So there is no processing done by the receiver to the video?

I also heard that high quality interconnects are even more important for video than audio (not that I want to start a huge thread about cables :W). True?

I have found that my 1098 processes video very well, but I get a buzzing sound through the speakers when I run the component cables through the processor. I would say that audio cables are at least as important as the video cables.

Does anybody else get a buzzing sound through the speakers, when component cables are run through the processor?

I don't, I have all my components used on the 1098 and on my TV...not a single hint of buzzing. If there is, I'd say it's a ground loop issue that's causing it between two components (DVD & 1098 perhaps)...you could try just as an example, get a piece of wire and touch the back screws of the 1098 and dvd player and see if it stops. If it does, it's a ground loop issue. I would only try this if you confirm that it is only one, two or all three of the cables that causes the sound. (disconnect each one until all three are disconnected and see if it stops with any or all of them disconnected). If that does, it tells you there is a ground loop issue with one of the devices and normally "grounding" them together will fix it.

Also, the 1098 does not "process" anything, it passes the signal through. However it will process the S-video and composite to upgrade to component connections (if you have this feature enabled).

High quality cable (not always based on price mind you) is a good idea for video and audio. I use good quality Belden cable that I make for myself and it works completely find and performs exactly like the "expensive" cables....just doesn't look as pretty that's all. Though most of us are more acute to video signal degredation than to audio. That's why it seems more important, but loss is loss doesn't matter video or audio.
