Sub not working, 1066 as DAC...

    What am I doing wrong?

While listening to CD's, I am trying to compare the DACs of my Philips 963 DVD/CD/SACD to those in the Rotel.

I am using coax connection from the Philips to the Rotel.

Using the multi-input I get a full range signal including output from the sub. This is the "sound" from the Philips DACs correct?

When I switch out of the multi input to use the DACs from the Rotel, I do not get any output from the subwoofer.

Any ideas from the 1066 experts out there????

Assuming you've done the analog bypass mod's you're getting a true bypass on the multi channel inputs...in other words its working properly. If you want to hear the sub connect the player to the dvd input via the digital connection as well as the analog cables on the DVD input. Then you can toggle between the digital and analog inputs.

Little confused, but I think he's saying that the analog in gets subwoofer, but the digital connection isn't.

"When I switch out of the multi input to use the DACs from the Rotel"

So he's switching to the digital input there I think.

If so, check your on screen menu under the speaker settings and make sure your speakers are set to small and sub to on, or speakers set to large, sub set to max.

        Andrew,

No, I have not done the resistor cut. I'm not clear on why I would need to use the analog outputs on the CD player to engage the DAC's on the Rotel?

Kevin, I do have my speakers set to large, sub set to yes. Maybe I'll try setting the sub to max. I may have tried this and still did not get any output from the subwoofer.

With the front's set to large and sub set to yes, the only thing going to the sub will be the .1 bass channel, only present on digital formats on DVD, not on a CD.

So with that, you shouldn't hear anything on the sub. Set it to max and it should come alive.

You wouldn't. Using the analog cables would use the DAC's in the CD player while the digital cable would use the DAC's in the Rotel. Assuming the analog and digital cables were attatched to the same device (DVD player for example) pressing the digital button would allow you to quickly toggle between the two DAC's making it easy to determine which you prefered.

As for setting it to max I wouldn't since max can send way to much bass to the speakers. What you should likely do is set them to small and then set the crossover pretty low. How low is really up to you but the general guideline is double the F3 point of the speaker which usually gets you in the 60 to 80 hz range.

              Kevin,

Yes setting subwoofer to MAX worked! I am now getting output from my sub.

Another question. I have the speakers set to LARGE, crossover to OFF.

What frequency is now being sent to the sub while set to MAX??? Do my fronts still receive a full range signal?

              Andrew,

I did try setting the speakers to SMALL and I guess the Rotel defaults the sub to YES, and does not allow any changes to the sub setting. This set up did not sound good. Sounds much better with speakers set to LARGE and sub set to MAX.

P.S. My Philips DVD/SACD/CD upsamples to 192 khz and of course the 1066 DACs can process this high sample rate!

The sub=max, crossover off completely removes the low pass filter on the sub output. Way too high unless you have another crossover on the sub itself. Try bumping the crossover back down to 80 or 60. The fronts will still receive a full range signal.

If it sounds better to you with large and max, run with it.. Sometimes this whole double-bass issue gets a little crazier then it is. I know before I got my sub equalizer, my system sounded better set to large/max. The extra bass from the main speakers helped smooth out some frequency dips I was dealing with. Since I've smoothed those out with an EQ, small/yes sounds better.

                Good luck!

                Kevin D.

                  Cool,

I prefer to run all speakers full range and use the crossover built into my subwoofer.

Thanks for the great input guys!

                    Hello,

I just upgraded my rsx-1055 to the latest version which is 2.30.

Now I'm not sure if it's a side effect of this firmware update, but when using the multi-input, I can increase or decrease the sub level and I can really hear it.

I apologize ahead on this if it's been covered..but I can't see a way to turn the sub off, for only the multi input..is it possible? The 1.50 update I just installed says that you can now disable the sub for individual inputs.
