    B&W 683 plinth findings

OK, so you can see my system via my signature below. My system is in a carpeted basement. I've been playing a lot with my speaker placement. I had them on the spikes with no plinth, then with nothing at all, then with the plinth on w/spikes. What i noticed is that going from no spikes and the speakers just resting on the carpet to then having the plinth on (with spikes) the bass dropped a lot. I like the way they look with the plinth on so i think I'm going to leave it on. But my question is why is there more bass with nothing on the bottom of the speaker. Now take into account the floor is carpet/concrete. I think that has a huge impact on the bass because it has nothing to resonate thru. Am I thinking correctly? So three questions remain.

    1) what do spikes do for a speaker?
    2) why does it seem like there is less bass with the plinth?
    3) how does a concrete floor impact the sound?

I think the spikes just help stabilize the speaker and help with not making marks in the carpet? Can't say I've noticed a difference with spikes on or off. Less bass with the Plinth? Hmmm Bass drivers farther away from the floor? Never even put the Plinths on mine...

The reason i put the plinths on mine is it makes it a lot harder to tip the speakers over.

I have often wondered if having the spikes helps the cabinets to be more ridgid. Perhaps with the speakers sitting directly on the carpet the cabinets move slightly in the opposite direction of the drivers when they move. This would effect the bass more due to the larger movements of the LF driver cones. I suppose thats why a solid speaker stand/base is so important.

Being as I have a carpet/wood floor I too noticed a bit less bass on the plinths. I'll be curious to your findings........

            B&W 683 Plinth / spikes question

Not sure how many of you have experience with the 683, but I was wondering why B&W advise attaching the plinth and spikes yet in the photo below (and every promotional photo I have seen) they decided to not show the plinth.

Obviously, I understand this is more than...

            Carpet Spikes
            by audiojunky
Is it aboslutely required to put carpet spikes if you're placing your speakers on a carpet?

I did not put the carpet spikes cause I heard that they can damage/tear the carpet. My wife won't be happy if that happens.

However a friend of mine said that to get smooth bass,...

            Subwoofer Spikes?
            by Club1820
Hello. When talking to one of my friends regarding my subwoofer setup - he suggested that I put a piece of carpet under my subwoofer (it sits on ceramic tile floor) and install spikes to elevate it a little bit. He said that this would improve my bass output.

            What do you guys think?...

What's the best way to move the 802s once you have the spikes on them!?
            by PewterTA
I just bought a couple maple plinths for under the 802Dis... I'm going to put the spikes on the speakers and then get them up on the plinths.

Now to compensate with spikes and wood (ie not good).... WKHanna is making me machined Aluminum discs with small divots in them for the spike...

            Speaker Spikes and Wood Floors
            by tizeye
Currently building Zaph's SR71 and matching stands. First primer coat on drying on sands as I type. Having difficulty deciding how to spike the stands.

With my sub, PE's 10" Titanic, I quickly learned pointy spikes + wood floors = disaster and the separate floor plates are a joke...
