I don't think DVD-A is 100% finished yet. They may not be able to put the logo on it until it meets the specs of the license.

I ended up passing on my early order opportunity. Two reasons:
- I'm still happy with my Oppo DV-980H and Sony BDP-S550
- I want to let their firmware updates settle a bit more, primarily in terms of DVD-Audio support
Oh yeah...the timing also didn't help, as I had just purchased a new Cannondale all-carbon fiber road bicycle. :WBrad- Bottom

The analog section of the Elite is outstanding and if you needed such, it probably pushes it ahead. The build of the Elite is going to be better. The Oppo is a universal player while the Elite does not offer SACD or DVD-A, so the analog and build superiority doesn't mean much if you want those. Both have very good video processing with ABT's VRS in the Oppo and Marvel's QDEO in the Elite. The Oppo is a more complete Blu-ray player offering full 2.0 support, so again if that's important to you, it comes out ahead.Originally posted by 1oldguyWondering if given the choice between the oppo and the pioneer Elite top model...which would be considered the better between the two spec wise?
For me, I want the added features of the Oppo, and don't need the analog section of the Elite. So even if they were free, I'd still take the Oppo. :TSantino

The necessity of 2.0 depends on you. There really hasn't been much compelling material offered online, and it seems to be more fluff than necessity right now. I'm a geek at heart so I want to have every bit of technology offered. If you're just interested in what's in the disc, 2.0 may not be a big deal.Santino

After thinking about it the lack of DVD audio is a bummer. The scad I could live without.
I have had only 1 experience with the DVD audio format and was blown away even on my little system I've had for years.I can only inagine what it will be like once I'm up and running.
I see that Denon will soon be releasing a universal player.Listing at $4500.00.Wondering what the fine folks here make of this player?A Man should never Gamble more than he can stand to loose.- Bottom

As fare as what I think about Denons new player? I believe Denon has crossed the line with adding snake oil to their products. They are trying to cash in on the outdated belief that there are major difference in source players. Sure with DVD there were differences, but when 1080p 24 is the ultimate end result which is native on the disk, and the audio is sent digitally nothing more is needed then a transport like the Oppo.
I believe as a digital transport using HDMI the Denon will perform no better then the Oppo. You have to ask yourself if the analog section is worth $4,000 to determine if the Denon has value IMO.- Bottom

Thanks Vancouver
On the Canadian web site the same player lists at $6600.00 So I'm not going that extreme.I am new to this so the help is great:}
I think at the end of the day I will not being buying a ton of dvd audio so I am starting to think it's not such a deal breaker after all.
My dealer can get the Pioneer Player, and at $2200.00 is as far as I want to go.I would imagine it would be quite an upgrade from my nad (Model 5420) CD player.
As long as the pioneer can do all the movie codex's I think i could live with that.
Feel free to set me straight,it does help.A Man should never Gamble more than he can stand to loose.- Bottom

Gene Harris Quartet ~ 'Listen Up' is available in SACDOriginally posted by impala454
Does anyone have a good recommendation to a newbie for SACD or DVD-A of say, some big band jazz?
I have given this album to at least 10 different people, some with no experience with jazz at all. Everyone has told me it is now one of their favorite CD's.
I think Amazon has some used ones for ~$12, that is where I got mine.

Just to be clear, the Oppo DOES now do DVD-Audio. Support was added in one of the firmware updates during the EAP, and refined a bit thru further updates. Apparently it is pretty good now, but it sounds like additional tweaking is still forthcoming.Originally posted by 1oldguyAfter thinking about it the lack of DVD audio is a bummer. The scad I could live without.

Regarding the Pioneer BDP-09FD, yes, it's there. Lower left corner of the back panel - ethernet 100BASE-TX (100 Mbps). The "ready" nomenclature means that some of the earliest released models will need a firmware upgrade to go to full BD-Live status.Originally posted by littlesaintIt says BD-LIVE-ready, but I don't see an Ethernet port in the specs.

Quote from Stone:I was extremely impressed by the Oppo’s analog audio output. SACDs sounded as good through the Oppo as they did through my longtime reference Lexicon RT-20. Blu-Ray movie soundtracks with the latest True-HD encoding actually sounded better through the Oppo’s analog outputs rather than through its digital connections routed directly into my Lexicon MC-12B HD (which does not support these latest formats.)
Steven Stone and Chris Martens over at AVguide give a :T on the analogue performance of the OPPO BDP-83.
Stone giving it high marks compared to the Lexicon RT-20 and Martens to the Sony DVP-9000es.
Not an official review but first impressions are looking real good on the analogue side of the BDP-83. Oppo asked that no official reviews be made until the public version is released.

Whenever you guys get your players, can you try the old Oppo region hack for the other DVD players just to see if it works.
Press Setup. Press "9210" in quick succession. A new window will appear. Press "0". Press Setup to exit.
I would really love to buy the BDP-83 because the DVD upscaler is suppose to be really really good, but I have to wait until it's confirmed by a user that it can be hacked.

I haven't seen this mentioned but I think the general public release of the Oppo BDP-83 may be $599.00 not the $499.00 the early adopters are getting. When I placed my order I noticed a list price of $599.00 grayed out above the $499.00 selling price.

Oppo offered me US$499 if I ordered within about a week, instead of the forthcoming retail $599; orders to be filled in sequence as stocks allow.
I watched the excitement around the previous Oppo launches with interest and eventually bought a 980H for my daughter. The much-hyped video quailty was not as good as my old Denon DV3300 (poor shadow detail) - I even tried recalibrating my 50" plasma. I recently tried the "9210" hack to play a DVD I'd picked up in the UK - I could get the audio track but not the video. I haven't been ensnared by BR, so I think I'll look for a used pre-BR universal player instead.- Bottom
