Alright HTG I've got a question. Bass management vs. current.

Wel we've seen the craze for bass management capability this year so far show up a number of times. I once was talking with a guy at a shop that sold primarily lexicon. We were talking about this latest fad. I didn't think much of what he said at the time, and am sorry I do not remember how he said it, but he DID say that anything that had any kind of bass management would severely cut the current flowing thru the receiver, so you would have the bass management feature, but just poor sound quality going to the highs and mids (and even low end?) .....

there's a lot of technical people on this forum, and i didn't get an answer at htf and of course dt really just made me feel like an outcast there.... as usual, except for a very few people so i'm hoping there would be some good answers here. Thoughts??!

      Paul,

From what I've gleened from the SMR Lexicon forum, Bass Enhance works best if you have side subs, or full range speakers.

My experience with BE, with my one front corner situated sub, full range mains, and bookshelf sides (set at large - they can handle the low frequencies) is that BE was not effective for improving overall audio dynamics. I did find that it to produced a slightly deeper bass response. However, what it took away was, I guess you would call it, imaging. The front soundstage seemed to close in upon itself. Good 5.1 produces an almost 3-dimensional feel to the sound, this was negatively effected when I put BE on.

I'm not sure I totally understand your quesiton paul, if you are talking about bass management in most modern receivers ie filtering out anything less then 80Hz when speakers are set to small then I don't think he's right. I'm not sure about how the other receivers do it but I know my Denon 3300 uses digital circuits to do the bass management not analog. If its all done digitally then I don't see how the current would be deminished at all. If it were analog then it might be somewhat I guess but I'd love to hear from someone that knew more about it them me.

I am no techie either nor do I own a Lexicon. Still it doesn't add up to me. The mainstream is thriving on this very technology.

Sounds like BS to me. I'm with Andrew - bass management as I understand it is done in the digital domain, prior to amplification. I don't see how this could affect current.

hrmmmm... I think what he was meaning was with the bass management features of the Sony777 and OUtlaw etc... something about the ability to produce bass to thhe fronts down to 60 hz will require massive amounts of current, and that takes current away from other areas *highs and mids*. We all know what happens when you have no available current.....

I don't know, perhaps I don't know really what i'm asking because I DONT REALLY GET THE POINT OF HVING VARIABLE FREQUENCY CUTOFFS.... maybe if someone could explain the whole deal to me perhaps that will help me phrase my question.

i dont know if it was sales-speak.... he was the one that brought it up... not me, and it was a high end store and i wasn't buying anything that day anyways. who knows.... it could have been.

what is the whole bass management thing all about
              anyways??!

oh btw..... i clicked to email responses to me with my title post, but never got any. Does something still have to be done on the system?

well I guess he has a point to some extent but i don't think its to much of a concern since the receivers that tend to have this feature tend to have decent amps. He's right in that the lower the frequency that harding the amp has to work to power it but any halfway decent amp shouldn't have much trouble pushing a 60hz signal in a tower speaker thats not totally inefficent. Beside the alternative is that you let the sub play bass notes that start to get to high for it to play cleanly so you end up with sloppy low mid bass. Personally I'd rather have nice clean bass from the sub and let the towers handle everything from 60 up if I could. My Denon is fixed at 80 which isn't to bad, certinaly better then 100 that a lot of receivers ues.

A lot of receivers wont let you even use a sub when you have the receiver in direct mode... this is completely useless to me... especially if i'm listening to music with a little bit of punch

Bass mangement to me is simply a limiter. You set the level of bass to a point that the sub can handle without going into distortion, then with that top level set, you can then set sub levels within your system to integrate with the other speakers and not worry about signal overload damaging your sub, well thats my understanding anyway.

Lexicon's wonderful Bass Enhance only works with side subs (2) or full range spks, the lower they play, the better.

There seems to be a lot of talk lately on what bass management should or should not be doing. It also seems that there are a lot of assumptions being made about what, where and how this BM should be invoked. I came across a few links that are interesting and suggest that the problem isn't with X but...

                          Hello,

I finally registered since I had something useful to add. More to come.

I've spent a good deal of time characterizing the Rotel RSP-1066's bass management under all input conditions. Below is the link to my web page with Rotel's Bass management report and workarounds...

The functions of the RSP-1066 are still the same as stated in my Bass management report.

The only difference is the ability to turn the Sub level to off for the different modes (Stereo, multi, dts, dd, etc.) with 1.48 (2.24) and above.

The multi-channel input is still the...

Hello, I'm thinking of upgrading from my RSX-972 to a RSX-1055.

Currently my Panasonic DMP-80K is connected via coax & also thru the 5.1 analog inputs. My RSX-972 lacks bass management for the 5.1 inputs; and as I'm too lazy to manually adjust the bass on my sub, I end up using the...
