Not sure if this is the correct forum. My 96 yr. old Dad and Mom just asked me to fix their ancient Zenith turntable. It does work but the problem is the arm that holds the needle. When a record drops, the arm goes all the way to the end, drops down, and then returns across the record to the middle or thereabouts. It stops in the same place each and every time. Can I fix this myself? Thank all of you.

This probably needs to go into the repair shop unless you have quite a bit of mechanical aptitude.
These work via interconnected gears, pulleys, cams and levers. So something is either wornout. Or something has slipped off.
If you pop it open and fail to fix the problem it may cost more than simply taking it to a repair shop.
That being said parts may be impossible to find unless you're exceedingly lucky and the repair shop has a nonworking unit they can strip for parts.

NancySpeed,
Since this is an ancient Zenith turntable, could it possibly be set to 45 instead of 33? That might be way the arm goes near the end of the record. If you want to talk to some experts, go here:
Otherwise, you may want to go to your nearest pawn shop and pick up a new turntable for them. They usually have them cheap.- Bottom

So in my quest of audio nirvana from from a record lathe, I came up with this design.
I have only run it with my test cartridge which is an Ortofon Blue and it sounds very nice.
Have yet to build the motor housing and controller for the BLDC motor, it sounded great even with the VPI motor....-

by manhattanmanI found a late '70's Zenith sterio in the trash. The radio and tape deck works great. It is a 70 watt unit and would play 78 rpm records if the the turntable worked. The turntable is frozen--it will not move, and when the system is put into "phono" mode, it makes a low humming noise. How...-
