    Cable run

Guys, just a quick question, I may have to run an S-video cable approximately 25 feet. Is this too long a run? Will there be much degradation, do you know?

Hi Clive, it's been a while, hope things are going well.

25 feet should be absolutely no problem for "real world" usage. Some people with ultra-resolution systems say that 10-12 feet is the max run without amplification, but for us normal types :B you will not see any signal degradation at 25 feet. Just purchase a good quality S-Video cable to be safe - you MIGHT be able to find someone around here that has some available.

    How's the renovation coming?

Mine S-vid is 25 feet and I don't see a problem with it but then again I'm not projecting it to a huge screen.

Many FP setups require long runs of video cable. As long as you use quality shielded cables, you shouldn't have any problem with degradation. I've done 25+ foot runs of composite, S-video and component cables in installations and I don't notice a degradation in the picture.

I have a custom-made S-Video cable connected to my front projector that is almost 25 feet long. It works just fine. The vendor told me that runs of up to 50 feet would be no problem unless the video signal was very weak, and a 100 foot run would have about a 3 db loss (without a signal booster, which is recommended for runs over 50 feet).

          Go for it!

Aaaah David, just keeping cool and I am extremely busy too. I only have time to check in at times but I spend more time working on the HT Guide for Lex.

Renovations? (See "Spaced Out" ) soooooooo Slow :uhoh: I will have time after this weekend to do more work. I have to be ready for "Thanksgiving" October.

Thanks guys for your responses I guess the cable run will be okay then. Makes life easy. Thanks.

              My late response:

I have a 30 foot run to my projector. No problem with picture on 8 foot wide screen.

25 maybe 30 feet is as long as I want to produce. With a strong signal, like DVD, sure, your good. But get to a weak over the air or cable broadcast signal on 50 feet, it can be a problem.

If someone wants longer than 25-30 feet, I suggest shortening the path some way as a first option, as a second option, going with a parts express or such budget cable. Sure, budget isn't best, but that way I don't have to build it or guarantee it. lol.

I got a fairly decent quality 50 ft S cable from Markertek.com for $55. It's a good commerical cable (no gold ends or spiify sleeving or anything), so if you are going longer than Lex will build, and want to get something really reasonable, it's a good choice.

Thanks Brandon, living in Toronto kinda puts me in a bad position when it comes to buying things from you guys south of the border. Our Dollar is not good at times plus shipping and taxes it's not worth it sometimes.

I might just buy shorter run cables from Lex. Keep the catman happy you know!
