    High End Is Wonderful

Since progressive scan is useless to me in the immediate future, and I am not interested in DVD-A,I found myself looking at a discontinued high end dvd player - the Sony DVP-S7700 to replace my mid end (non DTS ) Sony player. I had a read a lot of reviews on the 7700 and was aware that many home theater people on this and other sites have this player in their system.Well I got what was probably the last 7700 in this neck of the woods, hooked it up (component) to my Sony VPL400 projector and popped in a dvd.Well now I know why this unit is called a reference player. The picture was clean - almost filmlike- and colors were gorgeous. And this was from an old copy of Clueless. I can't wait to try out some of my newer dics.High end is indeed wonderful. I guess you only get what you pay for.

Congrats on your new 7700! My first DVD player was the 7000, which was in all likelihood the finest of the first generation players, and has a loving 2nd home at ThomasW's. Sony paid a lot of attention to detail with those players; the only thing that disappointed me about the 7700 was the lack of below std. black (7.5 IRE) reproduction (below black pluge, 0 IRE), which the 7000 was capable of. This made brightness calibration with the VE disk impossible.

However, the AVIA disk uses a an alternative technique, which works well with player that don't have "below black" capability like the 7700. It's also well suited to LCD projectors like your Sony (gee, George, your setup now mirrors mine of 1998; ThomasW has both units now.)

Enjoy, and if you haven't already, check out the AVIA disk; it can be a real aid in tweaking up your video system.

      Best regards,

      Jon

George, congrats on the player. I too had the 7000 1st gen player, and in fact still use as a CD transport. Unfortunately, the DVD playback developed a problem on dual layer discs. Of course, it didnt' do DTS either, so it was time for an upgrade. But it still plays CDs great.

        Enjoy,
        Doug

I've been eyeing that player for years but just kept finding myself upgrading the audio side of mt HT. Still I love the piece
