Samsung to Release Dual HD-DVD / Blu-ray HD Player

Is this old news? I don't remember seeing any discussion about it here.

Not really. It has been rumored but until I read the news release you posted, I didn't have a clue when it would be available. It now seems that will be near Christmas. But if it isn't priced low enough, it will sit on the shelves of the retail stores much like the overpriced LG dual player.
    Thanks for the heads up.

That sounds a little more reasonable. Will have to wait and see.

I might be thinking of a different dual player though so don't take my word on that.

I agree it's over-priced and under-featured, but we've had a hard time keeping them in the store. Granted we're not blowing through 100's of them,
            but they're a ton easier to sell then a high-end SD-DVD player.

Not in this part of the world. The nearest LG dealer is about a 30 minute drive from me and they have only sold one since it became available. Now they will only take orders but none seem to be forthcoming. However, they have sold about a half dozen of the Samsung Bluray players.

I am awaiting the Samsung unit myself. It cant be worse than the LG, and it will definitely be less expensive. It should do iHD as well. I will stick with a high end Denon player for SD discs.

While we seriously doubt a dual format player will help either side become the dominate format, it will help get some people down off the fence
well if they can get a good dual format player out for $500. It will certainly get me off the fence.

...and encourage a truce for the warring parties in this forum perhaps.

If I read that news release correctly, the dual player will be about $544 MORE than their standard player. If so, it will not be priced for the masses and certianly won't get me off the fence.

This particular machine will not, at that price point, move many off the fence. But, if it CAN do all it claims (and reasonably well), it will pave the way for more affordable models (just as the first "universal" hi-res audio players--quite expensive, as I recall--paved the way for such gems as the Oppo line a little while later). DVD emerged in 1997 but it took several years (probably around 5) before it could legitimately be called a "mainstream" product--in the sense that a significant portion of the population owned one. Let's give the hi-def video players a bit of time.

I'm trying to figure out why there is any interest in HD-DVD at this point unless some folks watch The Matrix trilogy every week?

The same could be said about blu-ray and POTC since the HD-DVD players are considerably cheaper at this point in time. Even though I have a PS3 and HD-Xa2 I prefer the Xa2 as the picture with SD DVD seems much better than using the PS3 (YMMV).

I have heard that this player does not provide total funcitionality of the Blu-ray capabilites, I'm not sure though.

                                Peace and blessings,

After some delay, Samsung has announced that it is now shipping their new dual Bluray/HD DVD player with an msrp. of $799. When the LG 200 comes out with added features over the 100 model, this will make two dual players available to the consumer. But LG will have to come down in price ( it has been...
