    Kent,
+/-3DB off axis means that if you put a voltage at a certain hz , the speaker will give you an audible sound that's no more than 3 decibels louder or softer than the speaker's median response.

The problem with this is, when you sit/stand your ears may or may not fall into the "axis" area. So you might actually hear a 6 db change.

Some people say that +/-2 Db is a better speaker. I personally would not care if it was a 2 or a 3. I hope that this answers your question.

      "Lies, damn lies and statistics"

The specs are meaningless without further information on how they were measured and what sort of 'rounding' was applied to the results.

I wish the companies would tell where the 2-3 db peak/null is rather than just say that. And as for 2 vs 3, your ears don't have a flat frequency response anyways, so either will work and most can't tell a difference.

Hello Kent and others. This thread is very informative and a pleasant read. I allowed this thread to continue to this point. I would really like to to keep this CLUB for beginners to HT. At this point I'd recommend that if you need continue further discussions on this subject to throw it to those guys in DYI.

              Hi all,

I've been playing around with one of my designs (the Monoliths): a 2.5 way with Peerless 830884 drivers and a SEAS 27TBFC on top. My parents have them, and they asked for a bit more top end sparkle (I assume due to their hearing loss).

              Anyway, after further refining...

This is one of those little projects that just kind of sneaks up on you... the precursor is the EM7 I did in 2003 for my daugher, a small MT with the HiVi D6.8 woofer and XT25 speaker, to replace the speakers we built when...

Hi, tonight while listening to some music I noticed that it seemed that more sound was coming from the right speaker. The center phamtom image was also skewed to the right side a bit. At first I checked my balance settings, then my cables...everything was as they should be. I started to worry that...

I haven't been exactly charmed by the updates on the original RS28a, so I've been looking for alternative tweeters with good characteristics and a wallet friendly price. The SB Acoustics SB26CDC-C000-4 can be found on Madisound's new product pages, but oddly not (the last time I looked recently) on...

Breaking with modern conventions - a highly musical 2-way system using an 8" woofer
              by theSven
              By Jon Hancock

This article will describe the fruits of my efforts to build a moderate sized speaker which might be moderately above average in performance for a basic two-way system. I desired a speaker like this both for my own use in secondary systems, and to fill a need for some friends, who desired fairly full range response (i.e., “it’s gotta have good bass”). Also, though I have access to a good wood shop, many potential DIY enthusiasts may not, so I hoped to use a modified...
