Quick question...

how do i atcually know my LG is actually upconverting the Video or not? sometimes im not too sure. My LCD dosn't have too many options on it (Syntax 27" LCD)

it will say on the LCD screen of the 7832.
I brought mine over to a bud's house (i dont have a HD display). We set it up to display 480, 720 and 1080i on his Sony Grandwega LCD. Worked like a charm.

it should be noted that i had to push in the 'upconvert' button pretty darn hard and long before i saw the format change on the 7832's display.

Before that i just assumed it had changed when, in fact, it hadn't.

UPconvert Display

I understand the 720P/1080i display when hitting the upconvert button but that is while the disc is stopped. i have heard that this player might actually not upconvert certain copyrighted material. Trying to figure out if there is a way of telling while the disc is playing? Sometimes i just dont trust this thing...

Some display shows the format of the input signal, while most don't.

If you don't have one that does, then you don't really know for sure.

That said, think about this: if you can't even tell if it's upconverted or not, then do you REALLY care? Does the picture look better just because you are assured it's been upconverted?

There are subtle improvements on the screen when it's been upconverted. You should be able to tell the difference if you're watching a CGI heavy DVD.

I have a hitachi 60vs810. It shows what the input signal is, but according to the manual it upconverts ALL signals to its native 1080i format. I've been told to not use my 480p signal from my dvd player and let the tv do all the conversions.

I have a Feb 2004 build date on mine and it converts everything to 1080i via component (you're using component right?).
If you have a newer version of the (greater then July '04- see the sticker on the back of the unit) 7832 you might have bought a player with the newer firmware version that will only play half the movies @ 1080i.

No biggie though as the older firmware is readily available if you need it.
i think there's a couple sites that have it available (hometheaterforum has a thread on it).
Don't ask me how to flash it though. Never had to.

Seems silly...

That they would not have an active led lit on the unit when upconvering is in progress. I think i might download the firmware that ensures all copyrighted media will be converted.

Alot of people like this player but so far i'm not so sure it was worth the $250.00 CND

Firmware Update...

Ok,

So i flashed my unit with the component firmware that allows all copyrighted material to be upconverted. Seems like it does work. But now i have another question....why is it that whenever I upconvert the picture I ger a 1/2 inch black bar at the right side of my screen? happens both in 720P/1080i modes althought the black strip is a little more narrow in 1080i. It's not a big deal...but it is noticeable.

Usually there is a control on LCD displays for horizontal position/sync alignment- this may need a slight adjustment. Happens with PCs on different front projection LCD and DLP displays, too.

New to the forum and I want to thank everybody for there vast knowledge about this amazing, albeit expensive hobby. I recently purchased the LG dvd player for my Sony grand vega. It does have a build date of july 04. Some dvds do upconvert, some don't. For those that have updated with the firmware, do we know for sure that this will solve the problem and all dvds will be upconverted? will it still upconvert through component after the update?
Future shop only had july 04's left.
I couldn't resist the deal. $149.99 cdn.

Awesome player otherwise.

The firmware "update" makes them work the same as March and earlier units. Mine upconverts everything all the time- if it didn't my NEC projector would go out of wack, because that's the only scan rate it's currently setup for! (CRT three eyed monster)

If it's your intention to use the component outputs, and go 1080i, then yes. That's really the mian attraction of this player. If you are going to run DVI, then keep your current firmware as it supposedly fixes the white crush. At least, that's what the firmware update did. Along with restricting 1080i upconverting on component to non protected DVD's.

I planned on running component. My tv has the HDMI inputs, and from what i understand, if i want better pq now, the LG (with component) was the route to go, the hdmi will become useful when the next gen dvds are out. I'm sure the LG will tie me over till then.

Could someone please explain how to flash the unit step by step with the firmware downgrade? I tried to do it, an it says that there is no disk in my player when i try to do it.
I have windows xp sp2 an i use nero cd burning program.

Assuming you burned the bin file correctly to the disk, did you put the disk in the player, power it down, then power it back up again to read the disk?

I burned the cd as a data cd, an i burned the bin file onto the disk by itself, should the bin file been in a folder? an should the cd been finalized? thats my main question is what style of burning do i use to save the file to disk?

got the firmware problem figured out, but i have another problem.
The buttons on the front panel for some reason don't work, the led light next to the power button dont do nothing, the only button that works on the front of the unit is the eject button. The LCD display works fine. I just wonder if maybe some kind of connection may be loose inside the player? I removed the top of the unit to look inside to see if could notice anything that looked like it was unplugged, but didn't see anything. I wouldn't mind except for the fact that the only way to use the upconvert features of this player is by pressing a button that don't work for some reason. I wonder if there might be a way to reprogram the remote to do this function.

So what you're saying is your remote works fine but the buttons on the DVD player itself don't work?

Well, if you want to control the 'upconvert' function from your remote, you can buy a harmony remote and setup the remote to control the LG DVD player. You can then setup the remote to have the 'upconvert' button for the LG player. I tried it and it works!

Yes the DVD player works fine, an the remote works fine. But the buttons on the front of the player itself do not work. The only button that works on the player is the eject button, an the LCD display on the player. I bought a new remote that has a jp1 port on the back of the remote, but im having problems finding a cable to use to do the reprograming of the remote.

upconvert button problem solved

I found a site that explained how to program a button on my 8810 One for all remote that i just got! :P Now i can use the remote to up convert the dvd's without having to depend on the button to do it! Here is how i did it.

B. To program a code:


Press the device key
Press and hold SETUP (wait for two blinks)
Enter 9-9-4 (wait for two blinks)
(Optional) Press the device button the code is coming from
Press SETUP (don't hold it)
Enter the 3 digit code
(Optional) Press the device button the code is going to
Press the button to be assigned


I found the IRcode for the upconversion button on the LG, an programmed it in, an it works like a charm. The code for upconvert is 069 hope this will help people out that has a similar problem or just 2 lazy to mash the button

yes all you have to do is burn the bin file to the cd, no folder is needed to place the file in, just burn bin to cd as a data cd. As long as it named the right name the player will recognize it! here is what the bin file should be named. lgromout as long as it named that, it will do the deal.

I go to the menu settings I set it for display (4:3 pan/scan).When I set the upconversion to 1080i there are black bars top and bottom. The dvd will play with no bars only in 480p. Will downloading the older firmware resolve this issue? My display is a Sony 61HS20 4:3.

To be honest i don't know, but i would imagine that changing the firm ware wouldn't effect that problem you have. But if anyone could tell you it would be this cat here, JonMarsh i would be willing to bet he would know.

Your conflict is in your display mode, and having a 4:3 set- does it really do 1080i at 4:3, or is it changing vertical amplitude to simulate having a 16:9 screen? For 1080i, you probably should set the display setting as widescreen. 1080i IS a widescreen (16:9) format. When you switch to 1080i, if your set is designed to display 1080i correctly, it will be internally changing the vertical amplitude, which is why you have black bars top and bottom.

Dude you need to rename the update from LV700i1.bin to this lgromout.bin before you burn that file to cd or the DVD player won't recognize the file, an the update won't start. i did that same thing an my player wouldn't recognize the update disk till i made an new disk with the proper file name on it. But don't be suprized when you do the update, an your dvd player starts showing LG on the screen. Thats what the firmware update does is converts your zenith dvd player to its sister player which is a LG product.

If it don't work for you, i have the correct firmware, an i will email it to you, then all you will have to do is burn it staight to disk.
