I've been listening to a bunch of old "Phase 4" stereo stuff from the London label. My coworker's uncle is an audiophile from the '60s and wanted some restoration work and transfers to DVD-A. Some totally interesting and crazy stuff. Must have been a wild time. Arriving on Earth a bit after, I couldn't imagine what it must have been like to experience it for the first time.

Unfortunately, I lucked out on the Taj Mahal - Recycling The Blues & Other Related Stuff....
But I did find Taj for $5.
Has a Reggae/Afro influence, but a bit too ‘pop’ for my taste. Well done musicianship and engr wise, none the less.- Bottom

Of the 8 LP’s I picked up at Jerry’s today for $32, currently spinning Wynton Marsalis - Black Codes (from the underground).
This was a sealed LP for $4, and if you like the Be-bop era of Miles, this is a winner. Might have a little to do with Ron Carter on bass :W It was recorded in ‘85 and sounds absolutely phenomenal. Huge dynamics and balanced mixing. Highly recommended.- Bottom

Hi Dave!
Yes, it is on the Columbia Label, bar code# is: 7464-40009-1
I had to listen to it twice yesterday! Ron Carter's bass miked fairly hot, and being a lover of jazz acoustic bass, this one is pure pleasure to my ears. There is one track where he is bowing, and it sounds like he right in room with me. Truly great fun!
I can’t get over how much more involving listening to vinyl is. My toe is constantly tapping, and I feel like I am drawn in to the ‘experience’ of the music to a much greater extent than when listening digital.- Bottom

No problem, let me know when you're available, I'm mainly available on tuesdays & thursdays only.
My friend was asking me if you were wanting some granite or marble or whatever under that thing. Let me know with some drawings or dimensions and he'll get it made up for you for free. :T
Plus we needs to start get the final planning stages for my 'twins'. I'm just trying to finish up the C/O BOM and get ready to get it ordered.
I've been looking up so albums that I might have to go with you to Jerry's to see if they have them and pick'em up. Then I'll be forced to get a TT! :lol:Digital Audio makes me Happy.

I try V hard to ensure the accuracy of the info I post, however, I made a big Boo Boo!
The last thing I ever want to do is be responsible for posting incorrect info on the this or any other site.
Ron Carter is NOT on the Marsalis LP. It is in fact Charnett Moffett.
Carter was on a different album I bought this weekend, and in my excitement and weekend level of alcohol consumption, I got the LP’s mixed up.
I sincerely apologize for the error :bash:- Bottom

Who's Afraind of the Big Bad Monk
Oh! what fun! This used LP plays as if it was hot of the press.
And Monk's unique melodies combined with top shelf big band artists in a well engineered live performance.

Stan Getz with Laurindo Almeida
Superb artistry with wonderful and clear ambiance of the recording venue.
A truly special example of the Bossa Nova genre.- Bottom

Kenney Burrell - Ode to 52nd Street
Kenny uses both acoustic and electric with some orchestral back-up on few pieces, a nice relaxing way to start the week.- Bottom

Steve Miller - Book of Dreams
Just plain fun. Good mixing, good SQ, (though a bit vague sound stage wise, in places, maybe my system or just the recording engineering) and it got my wife dancing!
Regardless, I like it when the wife is dancing :T- Bottom

Bill, how are you liking the changes we did to the TT? Hopefully now that you've had some good time to sit and listen it's really changed the sound and helped!!! I know just the quick listen I had it was a HUGE improvement!
You ARE seriously making me want a TT now...just need the funds for it and a phono stage to add to my system.Digital Audio makes me Happy.

Fine tuning the Vertical Tracking Angle really put the TT in the ‘Zone’. The High end sparkle and resolution are nearing what I hear at live jazz clubs, while the LF is still defined and dynamic.
Last night I was spinning my copy of Gene Harris Trio Plus One which has Stanley Turrentine on Sax, recorded live at the Blue Note in NYC, Concord Jazz CJ/303.
It is plain eerie how ‘real’ this LP sounds. Of course the performance is beyond reproach.- Bottom

I bought my first ‘real’ rekord this weekend. The ‘Train’ set me back $12. It’s on the Blue Note label, and weighs in at 180 gram. It is soooo sweet!
But, I have to say, as perfect as it sounds, there is something missing from this LP.
Yep, I think the engineers performed a soul-otomy on this one, too. I have more than a few jazz albums (I am new to vinyl, and have bought about 70, mostly used LP’s in past 2 months) from the 50's and 60's, and while they may have less sonic quality, they still have the ‘soul’ of the artists who are on them.
Why do they think they are doing us a favor by technically ‘enhancing’(?) my music? I, for one would rather have my music in the raw with the sweat and the spit, the ambiance and mostly minor imperfections that make it real as the day it was made, not this manipulated and often perverted facsimile. JMHO- Bottom

Give these bands a listen to on You Tube or at the Lost Highway website!
Fleet Foxes- "Fleet Foxes" [2008]
A folksy pop appeal from this west coast band.
Johnny Flynn- "A Larum" [2008]
Another gem from Lost Highway Records.

Gene Harris has become one of my favorite artists in the past year, and I am picking up everything I can find of his. Of the two I got this past weekend, this one is spinning now. Live performances usually seem to have more life in them as you sense the musicians reacting to the audience. This one is no exception. a ton of energy from the brass and rthym sections, and mixed with great vocals on a few tracks. Recording quality is OK but not great by any means, a little flat overall. But the music transcends the sound, and heart and soul of the creative talents on this disc shine though. It was not until the 4th track that I realized this was a mono recording, because the music was so involving.

Death Magnetic is excellent, really enjoying it, unreal solo's. Probably not their best but very very close, a lot better than St Anger, load and reload. More modern than the older stuff but with a similar signature sound from their best which makes the album what it is.
The CD version is not as good as the 5 x 45 rpm vinyl version (180gm) in terms of sound quality, it costs a lot more compared to the CD but worth it imo. You get a lot more dynamic range with the vinyl compared with the heavily compressed CD version.Last edited by DL86; 13 September 2008, 20:34 Saturday.- Bottom

Yes, my goodness is the CD compressed. Why oh why must they destroy stuff like this?!?! It's almost enough to make me not listen to it. I wish they would've stuck with the sound off the black album (metallica)...it was just starting to sound good! I mean in terms of quality of sound, not artistic material.Digital Audio makes me Happy.

Got some 180g and 200g vinyl in heavy rotation.
The good stuff you know. Muddy Waters, RL Burnside, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield, Duke Ellington. With some new school stuff thrown in like Amos Lee, White Stripes and post Dire Straits Mark Knopfler.
