An October 31 workshop at the NY AES Convention featured (L-R) statistician Josh Reiss (Queen Mary University, London), famed recording engineer and academic (McGill, Montreal) George Massenburg, binaural recording specialist Bob Schulein, and supremo mastering engineer Bob Katz discussing testing hi-rez recordings. Reiss presented a meta-analysis derived from the data of 20 published blind tests, showing that although the individual tests had mixed results, the overall result was that trained listeners could distinguish between hi-rez recordings and their CD equivalents under blind conditions to a high degree of statistical significance! — at Javits Center. :W

One might also ask, on what system with what converter? but I don't want to be associated with the nay-sayers re Hi-Res versus CD or less. CD can be quite good, very good on the right system, but it's quite difficult to do that- easier IMO with high res files.

Then, there's the case or situation where CD on one DAC may perform better than high res on another DAC- this sounds unlikely, for anything above a few thousand dollars, but I would take well mastered CD's on the TotalDAC-D1 Dual over high res on say, a Berkeley Alpha DAC or NAD M51. And the comparison is for rips from a hybrid SACD; with the DSD converted to 176/24.

Mind you, I'm only speaking with regards to gear I actually own and use.

That's the thing about the subjective response to audio playback... it all depends...
