    Equalizers

My question is: are equalizers really used any more. I remember my father's top of the line system in the late 1970's early 1980's. He had an equalizer that he painstakingly set. I couldn't adjust the equalizer under penalty of death or something far worse. I haven't really noticed equlizers being sold in the big box stores. In addition as I have moved into seperate components and away from the big box store producuct, I haven't noticed equlizers being a product that is pushed or has much demand. Is anybody using them? Do you find them necessary of valuable, if so what are you looking for your equlaizer to do. Just something I've been wondering about lately.

The old EQs were basically 2 channel tone controls which some tried to use to balance speakers and/or rooms. Far from optimal for that. Today, there are very sophisticated multichannel EQs that do a better job of fixing speaker/room problems. Some are even built into regular components (Audyssey, ARC, Trinnov, MCACC, YPAO, etc.)

If you are using a 2 channel system, and your speakers don't sound as good as you would like them to (which very few do), a good quality EQ can improve and maybe even perfect the way they sound. Most systems these days have several factory preset tone control settings that you are stuck with, if they don't correct your sound, you're out of luck. Be careful if you do decide to buy an EQ, I have tested many that when it was all said and done, the system sounded better without them due to the poor quality of the EQ.

Most such EQs were abused in the past although they could be useful.

?? Most systems these days either have no EQ at all or some will offer one of various correction EQs. If used correctly, they will usually be an improvement although proper acoustical treatment and setup are not supplanted.

The answer is to get a system with a built-in digital EQ as there are few add-ons of quality and they tend to be expensive.

          Room Correcting Parameric Equalizer?
          by toledoguy
I have a true need for a automatic room correcting parametric equalizer if such a beast exists. Let me explain. I live in a condo which is built with the "Great Room" concept. The Living room, dining, entry area is all one big room with celings that run to a very high peak of 30' (and provide...

Receivers with at least a 3-band equalizer?
          by selection7
I'm looking for a stereo reciever capable of outputting and inputting 5.1 digital audio that has at least a 3-band equalizer. Apparantly equalizers are out of vogue these days and we can't be trusted to set things how we like, we need presets. Anyway, I also want it to be able to indepedently control...

          by Sonnie Parker
I have spoken with Behringer and they have shown serious interest in designing a replacement for the BFD that is more suited to the consumer market. As many of you may already know... the DSP1124 has been discontinued. The replacement FBQ2496 only offers 1 preset and still doesn't get us many of the...

          The Equalizer
          by Ovation
Actually watched it via Netflix streaming (in Canada, Netflix only streams). My PJ makes the HD Netflix stream look better than broadcast cable, if not quite as good as BD discs (in the aggregate). Sound is only Dolby Digital, not lossless, but my gear makes the most of it.

          The movie...
