Can you over filter your line with conditioners etc

I think this is still on topic as it has to do with the end sound coming out of our speakers.

Question is: I have heard from some experts that some line conditioners can over filter the electricity causing a montone feeling to your system.

Now I have a problem in my town where there electrical current varies and its worrisome.

So I use a Furman Voltage regulator/line conditioner then everything goes into a Shunyata line conditioner.

All this line conditioning we can use is smoothing out the current and effecting our systems. Is the effect "overkill" ??

Excessive smoothing has nothing to do with it since the AC conditioners are not on an audio signal line. The question is whether the conditioners limit the AC below the needs of the equipment. Correctly designed and chosen conditioners will not.

      Kal,

So what do conditioners do. They filter extraneous "noise" coming from other sources in the house or neighborhood.

Yes but that's AC noise, not signal noise. If it is low enough and/or the filtering built into any competent A/V component blocks it sufficiently, it is irrelevant. If it is excessive enough to affect sound/performance, I prefer correcting the problem at the source, if possible.

            1. Every situation is different, requiring a different solution. There can be no blanket recommendations, imho.
            2. That is what I write about. Most of my past columns and reviews are available at the Stereophile website at the URL in my sig. You can use the awful search engine there for more specific info.

              Misterdoggy,

I've left this in Club B&W for a day so some of the more "dedicated" Club B&W members who rarely venture out could see it - but as it is off topic (everything has to do with the sound coming from speakers - so that is toooooo much of a stretch!) and you will get a broader range of response in the right forum, I'm moving it to the Audio Hideout...

                  Line Conditioners?
                  by Jnorth1178
Iam new to Line Conditioners. My dealer handles the Panamax line and is offering me the Max 5510 for my Stereo set up which includes PrimaLuna pre and amps, and B&W 804s speakers. I would appreciate any evaluation you can give me on the Line conditioner. Thanks. JNorth1178

Question about new Rotel line conditioners
                  by H.Donald
First and foremost...how do they do it??...mainly the price. The new 1040 is going to sell for less than 500 bucks. It has all the amenities...multi-stage protection, isolated noise filter banks, and here's what gets me....automatic voltage regulation.

M**ster has their AVS 2000,which retails...

                  Power conditioners for HT gear?
                  by Joelp
                  HI all,

I've been wondering as of late as to the effectiveness of power conditioners for home theatre equipment. For me it would be for my Receiver, DVD player tape deck, VCR, Sub and TV. I wonder though, are these AC line conditioners really much better than a $50 computer surge protector....
