    Ripping Question #2: Defragmenting

Not being THAT familiar with the inner workings of Mr. Bill's world I'm not exactly sure how Window's defragmenter works. Is it possible that it can cause damage to, or somehow modify a ripped file? I don't see how it can as defragmenting doesn't seem to damage or substantively alter non-audio files (audiophiles? :B ), but I thought some clarification would be good.

As I understand it, during computer (and hard disk drive) usage information is stored wherever the hard disk drive has space available. This information can be randomly stored all over the place on the hard disk drive. Over time this slows up the process in which information is accessed by the read-write heads of the drive. When we "defragment" the hard disk drive, all this stored information is accessed and "restored" in a logical and associated location on the hard disk drive and any "fragments" of unusable data are discarded. This not only frees the hard disk drive of useless information (thus creating more space) but also enables easier and faster access by the read-write heads and thus speeds up operations. No information is lost in the process.

      Problems Finding a DVR
      by tom314159
      Greetings,

I am a bit frustrated after my initial attempts to find a digital video recorder. I envisioned a device that would:
      1. Record digital television off the air by means of an internal digital tuner
      2. Record to a hard disk drive so I can erase the recording...

I didn't realize that my laptop didn't come with a Windows XP disk, and I screwed it up, and had to pay my local computer dealer to get it restored.

Apparently I was supposed to create a Restore Disk at the beginning..... I seem to remember that....... but I thought I had a proper XP...

      Hard drive question
      by Foxman
Ok, for many years I have operated under the assumption that you shouldnt fill a hard drive much beyond the half way point or it might become unstable. This might be a myth, I don't really know. So, I made the "media" PC for my CD's and am using 2 hard drives. One drive that has windows and...

Who wants a new DVD player (RDV1090)?
      by csuzor
Please vote if you would consider purchasing the new DVD player from Rotel (probably RDV1090). Please also indicate what features would be essential for your purchase.

Given the current rumours, it will not have SACD capability.
What else could possibly justify upgrading to this...
Will purchase / upgrade for sure
