    New 5.1 setup build - Creativesound V1, V2 and V2 ML-TL

Currently developing a set of 5.1 speakers after being out of the game for quite a while. I am using the creativesound.ca kits. The plan is to use a V2 (MTM) for center, V2 ML TL (vertical MTM, transmission line tower) and V1 (MT, ported 2-way bookshelf).

As of now I haven't started the V2 but the V2 ML TL is nearing completion and the V1 are complete:

    Very nice!
Could you explain how you got the rough finish shown on the baffel on the "done" picture?
I'm looking for something like that for the stands of my Ardents.

Thanks for the feedback . The paint is a product called Gravel Guard. It is a black, textured paint. I'm a big fan of it.

Nice. I like the thickened baffle look you're working on with the MTM. I remember Jeff Bagby doing a design with the Creative woofer and saying good things about it. What is the tweeter?

Got in the rest of the parts I need for the towers and will hope to get them done next weekend. I also hope to get some of the main cuts and driver hole cutting done for the V2 center soon.

Thanks. They are great. I've been out of the hifi game a while and these have reignited my interest. Lots of great detail and depth and a surprisingly potent bottom end.

Also built a small 15" sealed sub. Using an old Shiva in it for now but plan to upgrade to an SDX 12 when money allows This enclosure size is not as ideal for the Shiva but it already sounds surprisingly decent.

Indeed, I bet you are very pleased with them. The sub no doubt helps to add in an extra dimension to the sound of course.

Instead of replacing the sub with the SDX12 consider keeping the current one and building a second sub instead. Multiple subs is deffo the way to go with regards to bass quality.

Thanks for the input. The 15" cube is more well suited to the SDX 12, the Shiva is a little high in Q in that box (probably nearly 0.8) so it is a "bouncy" for my liking in the mid bass for pure music. The SDX 12 will be better behaved but you are right, perhaps I will build a somewhat larger and more damped box for the Shiva and see if I can find a way to integrate it into the system. I also have an old 200 liter ported Tempest which can be used as home theater brute subwoofer.

                                All finished now

Got the center channel completed and built a stand too. The stand is designed to sit behind my television and raise the center channel just above the screen though it would also be floor mounted if I change around my configuration. Center channel fills out the sound and improves the anchoring to the screen for dialogue significantly. It also sounds excellent for podcasts in Pro Logic II mode. The horizontal MTM design seems to perform just fine in regards to off axis performance as well.

Now, the Modula MTs are, perhaps, a bit old school at this point, so I don't plan to go into a lot of detail about the build. The only somewhat unique thing about these is...

I've seen a few threads on painting and getting high gloss piano black finishes, etc etc, but I just have a pretty basic MDF paint question. I have a simple 2-way design I built as my first DIY speaker project, and am ready to finish it. For the moment lets just say I don't have an air compressor...

I was going to wait until I had this speaker finished, but I've run into a bit of a problem. I was using spray paint that was laying around the house, and it's that H20 latex glossy black. The problem is that the paint is coming out blotchy, it's not spraying very evenly. I have to spray a thick coat...

I'm close to being ready to prime my new subwoofer enclosure

the majority of the filling has been done (tedious process that is...) almost all of the work with the roundover bit is finished and I'd like a suggestion for a suitable primer to use prior to painting.

                                  I don't...
