Shark FX is both PC and Mac, but I run the Mac version. It has a high degree of interoperability, due to being able to work with file format from other programs (AutoCAD, Sketchup, Catia, etc) and standard exchange formats like STEPS. I was a long time AutoCAD user in the old days. Shark and ViaCAD are descended from a CAD program (Concepts CSI) that developed the automatic cursor alignment techniques used and licensed by several other CAD programs. ViaCAD provides most of the same design functionality, but not the complex rendering capability of Shark FX.

It's probably overkill, realistically, for speaker design, but I like the software a lot. Model to sheet functionality is quite useful, with a decent printer.

Thanks Jon, I'm familiar with AutoCAD and Concepts from work, though have not used them. I'm definitely a CAD neophyte but have enjoyed using Sketchup. I would like to put together a CNC router at some point, that may force me to get a little more serious in the CAD world.

I'm doing the Jenzen NEXT T25 with the CA26RFX woofer in a ported cabinet. I'll detail it with pics when I start my thread (hopefully soon). These started out to just refurbish a pair of RTR 300d speakers with new baffles for my brother but that didn't sound like fun so it turned into a complete rebuild...it's been quite fun. A couple teaser pics of the drivers and a sketch of the speaker.

I like it...very nice work you are doing. I'm relating to your build because I'm also working on a Troels project...one of the Jenzen Seas designs. I've been working on it on and off since May. It's my first build so I was also accumulating pics before I start a build thread. I've had the same thoughts about my neighbors...I ponder my next moves quite a bit :W Good luck with the project!

Thanks for the kind words guys ...... cjd has it figured out though and as Jon also pointed out I cheat. I started the actual building back in July. I figured I'd get things rolling along before posting so I would have something to actually show. I think I spend more time planning then I do building, as a result I don't move along too fast. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm nuts just standing there staring at the wood working out the next step in my head.

John as for for the fit up ..... trust me there is still going to be some bondo to fill in cracks and uneven areas. Though I have found with the last few things I have built, not just speakers, drawing it up in Sketchup first has really helped with the quality of the build. It lets me visualize things and make adjustments without having to waste a pile of wood in the process. As a matter of fact I don't think I would have even been able to build these cabinets without using it. Take a look at this picture and look at all the crazy angles and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, it's one of those things that looks like it was designed either by a drunken sailor or Leonardo DiVinci- more likely the latter.

I feel the same way about planning, which is why though I had a fair amount in hand back in December when I ordered my 6 piecers of LBL ply, there's been a lot of Shark FX work since then, and rolling changes as I get inspiration or see things differently.

I have not heard of Shark FX is that a Mac specific package? It looks like it is a little more serious than Sketchup.

One of these days I'm going to have to try some LBL ply. I mostly use Baltic Birch and mdf for my builds. I've looked around, but the closest I could find any LBL was 2 hours away in Richmond.

Look Ma no glue ....

Here's where all those biscuits came in handy .... it let me put the cabinet together and move it around (within reason) without a drop of glue or clamps.

I love what you've done with your Ryobi! If I do any projects next year, I'll have to go look on the BT3 forum and check that out- it's been a while since I've been over there. And your miter jig is the cat's meow- I've been looking at one of those, but it just hasn't been urgent (yet).

Thanks Jon ...... The miter jig was a birthday gift from my wife, I was tired of messing with the one that came with the saw trying to get an accurate cut. Once you square this one to the blade the rest is a breeze.

Did you use any inspiration for the new top, or just wing it? I've been trying to determine the best road to working with larger panels safely, and that's one option - however, it limits my ability to use the fence I have, so I'm curious. Haven't even looked to see what's out there.

I saw something over at BT3 Central where they are a big fan of my particular saw. Someone had done something very similar and I tweaked it a little for what I needed. I also saw the aftermarket riving knife setup which I purchased. It was the first I had found for my saw. The top gives me a lot more working areas and I can use the fence on both sides of the blade. I also added a better switch for easier access. It's not a Martin but it does a pretty good job over all.

Of course I cheat ... all's fair in love and war and all that . Besides it saves on the back and keeps those pesky boards where you want them rather than binding and bouncing off your face at warp 9 speeds. Did that many years ago, thought I'd been kicked by a mule !!!

Some more pics

Finally had to build a cross cut sled for my table saw, seemed like the best way to deal with all of the different angles I had to cut. That of course was after having to build a new top for my Craftsman saw that had not miter slots for the sled .....



Setting the blade with a digital bevel gauge made things fairly straight forward with pretty good results ....

Interesting, did you consider the Jenzen Illuminator with it's transmission line base cab and time alined mid 2 order design?

I too was looking at these designs while I'm waiting for Jon to finish up the Ardents or maybe a 10" Death Star,(I'm just going to be patient). From reviews it's hard to get a sense of how good his xover work is and I think He needs to put out some matching centers for all those tower designs he cranks out.

Anyways looks like a fun project and I look forward to your progress. :T

When I decided to pull the trigger on the 1071's (back in March) Troels had not come out with the Jenzen Illuminator yet, so it was not a factor. I had already started collecting parts when it was released. There is also the part of not being able to change the cabinets at all with the Jenzen line. Part of the fun for me at least is being able to put some of myself into the build. I am not at the point where I can design the entire project, so that leaves the cabinet, keeping in mind the important dimensions that the designer has called out. I did this with Jon Marsh's Modula MTM1's that I built a while back. I'm not sure what, if anything, my cabinet design changed, I don't have Jon's build to compare them with. I will say that I've been very happy with them and they have impressed anyone that has heard them .... Thanks again Jon.

By the way I was pining after the Ardents as well ..... you win in the patience department.

As for the xovers ..... I will have to wait and see. Troels seems to have a loyal following (for what that may be worth) and the builders of the 1071 all seem to be very happy with the results ... time will tell.

Well the bug hit again ....... time for another speaker build. Since I had done a couple of 2-way builds already I wanted to try a 3-way design this time. After much looking around I decided to go with Troels Gravesen's Jensen 1071 . I was following some new designs here with interest that were not yet finalized (Mr. Marsh) but due his work commitments, very inconsiderate of them to not give him time off!, and my impatience, I went with the 1071.

In the past I've typically finished a project before posting pictures, but decided to go ahead and post as I go this time. I've tweaked the look over what Troels did with his build. I have kept baffle dimensions, driver placement, and cabinet volumes all the same. I found Sketchup rather helpful when it came to keeping track of volumes and in particular all of the needed angles when it came to cutting material.

So I started collecting parts, working on the cabinet design with Sketchup and picked up some wood and started making some saw dust this past summer and here is some of what I've been up to .....
