It's 3am. Got everything running around 7. Been listening since then except for a short sandwich break and making a celebratory mojito! It's out of print, but you all MUST find the ARARAT soundtrack done by Mychael Danna. I wanna cry every time I hear track 2. It sounds sooo good AND the music is wonderful. There is a low hall rumble around 12Hz that actually enhances the soundstage width and depth IF you can reproduce it and especialy if you keep your bass or subs in stereo. That's a yes and a yes for me now. Thanks Rythmik! Prior, I only heard it at the studio and that was with a single, mono sub. Also, the orchestra was recorded in a different hall than the singer. If you system is good enough, you can hear this too, but it really doesn't ruin the enjoyment at all.

So how are you liking your speakers?
I'm trying to put together a high efficiency design for HT, using active x-overs.
I saw your studio setup of the TD12-M TPL150 2.5 way, and was initilally tempted to go that route as well, except using the TPL-150H instead.
After getting some input from John and Simon, however, I started favoring a WMTMW with TD12S, TD6M, and TPL-150H.
Now I'm seeing your current and I can't help but think about integrating the Neo10 with the TPL-150H and a pair of TD12S, with an 18" wide baffle, and the WTW TD12S/TPL150-H stacked right next to a 2-stack or 4-stack of BG Neo10's. Having worked with basically all of these drivers, what do you think of this idea? Mostly I'm trying to figure out how many of the Neo10's to use, and in which configuration (line array, .5 way like Zaph recommended).
I also just wanted to say thanks for all your detailed posts on your speaker projects. They have inspired me to take on a monster HT build! I've already got an 8-pack of 18" high excursion subs for a great IB location up front.
I'm also still considering the JTR triple 12 L/C/R and Triple 8 for surrounds. That would be a great setup, so I'm trying to keep my budget to something in that ballpark of $6k for just the mains and surrounds.Last edited by zacjones; 14 September 2011, 20:17 Wednesday.- Bottom

Been a little lazy lately to get the project fully finished. Enjoying the sounds too much, but I know they can get better. I still need a little more treatment in my room and the final tweaks to the xover and eq settings. I've been comparing some mixes for studio to home and I think my first reflection point on the ceiling is still messing up the focus and clarity of the image. Maybe it's an unfair comparison because we are talking a fully tuned and designed studio control room versus my completely tiled(pretty live sounding) house, but I gotta get the results closer. I know mine are capable of beating the mains in terms of resolution and detail, just my room is messing it all up.
Putting a row of neo10 next to the TPL and TD12 is a bad idea. How about the Neo10 over/under the TPL-H and the 18's under that. Or as I suggested on the AVS forum, the TD6 or 18 sound 6ND over/under the TPL! Now you'd be talking some dynamics! Those were 2 of my favorite cone drivers auditioned before committing to the Neo10.
That is the one thing my home speakers lack a little compared to the studio mains. The startling dynamics. Not that mine sound compressed, but when pushed a little, the mains just jump even higher until it seems unreal. Completely effortless sounding even at high levels.

Just seems they are a teeeny tiny bit difficult to get right now so figured I'd ask just in case.
I may also find a use for that B&C in mine, I've had my eye on it for a while. Maybe the 12 instead though.

The B&C is a nice driver. I'm EQing mine down to near 60hz with no issues. The last thing I really need to perfect is the alignment btw the B&C and the subs. I have not sorted that out 100% since the final calibration to the baffles. Good, but not the best it can be....Originally posted by cjdNP

Only downside I have now is the combo of the Raal and neo10 are so revealing that poor recording techniques are killing me. Every time I think a driver is straining a little or distorting, I check on some really good headphones and it ALWAYS in the recording. Lots of overdriven vocal tracking going on these days. Not sure why recording engineers push level so hot still with 24bit recording. Pretty much never notice this on more standard speakers. Not sure if it comes from the quick rise time of such lite diaphragms or what, but it's an unusual sound because you really hear into the details of the sound, but it has none of that bright, fatiguing thing with most "detailed" sounding speakers that you find out really just have a tilted up treble response.
Only other issue would be the limited sweet spot size. Since I've got the horizontal offset btw the tweeter and mids and am crossing kinda high, if I shift much left or right, I get a nice suckout in response even with steep slopes and playing with phase.

For the most part, yes. Still playing with the sub a little, but pretty happy for now. I need to get them out in the sunlight for one last set of glamour shots now that I've got the sub cradles completed too. I need some really good shots to try to win some more bamboo. Every month, Cali Bamboo gives away free stuff for the best submitted projects and I've got some studio monitors planned that would look excellent with the baffles dyed grey over top of the natural colored bamboo plywood. 8)Originally posted by AJINFLAWhat's the latest word Greg, done tweaking the design?

I'd definitely like to hear them. It's when, not if. Just wanted to make sure they were all dialed in. Really liking that bamboo finish.Originally posted by gbeglandFor the most part, yes. Ah, you saw that. That would be cool. Not sure if anyone else from the forum is going. I recall there were a couple N FL guys (Frodaddy, etc.) as well as the usual suspects in the ATL area (Paul W, Bob x2, etc.).Originally posted by gbeglandTryin' to make it to Axpona to hear your monitors. Not going anywhere for the next 3 weeks
. It was a last second thing, so I'm in full scramble mode.
When, not if, I make the trudge over to ORL to hear the dipoles, I'll be sure to bring some M1s in tow. See how they do on a mixing console
.
cheers,

Hi Greg,
Thanks for sharing your design. Just for fun, I'm trying your tweeter in the Isiris Jr. My ears are still getting use to the sound of a baffle as the Raal came off the top of my Nao Note clone. I haven't had a chance to measure and apply eq yet. but the system already sounds very nice and will only get better.

by wkhannaQuestion re the Neo:

by Black300zxWhat's the best way to measure a driver's f/r? I'll be taking measurements of my css wr125's and dayton 3/4" neo tweeters soon. I already have the enclsosures built. Should I measure them on the baffle they'll be mounted on, measure them on an oversized baffle, or free air? If I measure them...-
