    Stupid DVD burner question

Well I did a succesful run backing up a DVD except for one small thing that's under my skin. I bought a nice spindle of TDK 4X capable DVD-R's that I seem to only be able to write to at 1X speed?! What the f's with that?! Anyone have any idea how to fix this? It doesn't seem to matter if I tell Nero to detect the speed or tell it directly myself it just goes to 1X and stays there :M

Please help me fix this ;x(

    Which burner are you using?

Part of the diff between DVD+R and DVD-R is that the latter are harder to recrod "fast"; on some machines which will do +R at 4X, they'll only do -R at 1X. That may be your situation. I only use Sony and Memorex +R media, myself. Playsback fin in my STB and all my PC's.

It's a Liteon drive that's supposed to be capable of 8X for +R and 4X for -R. It's not cheap no-name media (it's TDK) so I figure it should work...shouldn't it?

You'd sure think so... but there's a surpsing amount of variability in media. Sure you weren't using a DVD-RW? That would be limited to 1X.

Which software are you using? I bought Nero Ultra, and I'd say it's tops...

Yeah it's DVD-R and even DVD-RW is supposed to write at 2X. I've got Nero Ultra 6....

I think I may have found my answer here of all places.

I've changed the setting and will let you know if it works

Keep us informed! That certainly seems plausibe- and reasonable, too.

Myself, I'm not a speed at all costs, in fact I do all my audio burning at the lowest speed the hardware will support.... just a luddite, I am!

                  Lex

So that link I posted didn't work, in fact it made a frisbee  But I'm thinking I'm just going to return the discs as the ones that did "work" only wrote at 1X yet still managed to have picture and sound frags at a few parts. I mean, ok fine don't write at 4X but at least write at good quality when doing 1X  I guess my thinking TDK was one of the "quality" brands is now out the window

                    :T Aud19

I was having the same problem when burning DVD-Rs
they would only burn at x1 (when the drive is capable of X4.....)

-> look for a firmware update for your Liteon DVD recorder...
you should be able to find it easily with Google.

I flashed my pioneer and it's now region free and burns at max speed all the time....

                    =)

I did find a updated firmware and those 4X discs now show up as 2X  so there was some improvement. I'm just worried about using more of the TDK discs as the ones I did use 4 had a few small sections of fragmented audio/video and one was a coaster  Do you guys think the new firmware might improve things...?

well usually it's better to take the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach...but in your case it isn't working properly. Have you tried ANY other 4X or 8X brands of media. Maybe your problem is just with TDK.

Some of the best media is from TAIYO YUDEN if you can source that.

Ritek media will work well too.

Optodisc is inexpensive and seems to have good compatibility (that's what I'm using).

A firmware update maybe in order.

Incidentally the slower you burn the less errors you write to the media. The are utilities that will analyze your burn for (Inner and Outer) errors against the original. Slower burns tend to produce less errors.

Do some reading in here...pssst....look for Kprobe

Already signed up there Gordon It seems that the firmware for the 811s doesn't support a lot of new media, including the TDK I bought So what happens is it uses a generic write strategy instead of one specific to your media and hence does not work nearly as well. So until/if Liteon releases new firmware, lot's of new media won't even be recognized by my drive. I've contacted Liteon to see if they have any plans for new firmware in the near future otherwise I may reurn and exchange my drive.
