I've been hardcore into racing sims here lately and I found this link for DIY "FPTVs." A few people are using these to use their computer monitor and project a big picture. Thought it was interesting, but I'll stick to my purpose built unit.

It would be an interesting project to try out, but for their full $335 kit price you can likely get a real projector used, one with a built-in scaler (for watching sources other than a computer) and giving you better light output and much better contrast.

But these things use $30 lamps and are likely way brighter than a used $300 unit.

And then there's the fun of building it yourself.

I'll admit that it's interesting, and I do have a 17" LCD monitor with a dead backlight that I was going to throw out. So who knows? maybe I'll try it out.

It would be great to put together a secondary projector for internet use and gaming that I am not worrying about burning up the bulb on at all. :T
I don't anticipate getting the awwesome picture quality from something like this that you would see in a HT projector, but for those computer-based uses it could be great for the cost.

          Projectors are addictive.
I started buying them on ebayand aquired six projectors, four do not light but two of the infocus machines show a very nice bright picture.
My total investment was just over 180 bucks but then spent a couple more for some pull down screens.
We don't really use them but yesterday evening we had a video party and I was displaying the movie around the back lanai with them.
Anyone who wants projector parts just PM me and I'll send you a left over unit which has dead bulb or dead PSU.
After a while I got over it.

I think the DIY pj craze has probably run its course. It might be of interest for those that want to play around. Being able to pick up a 720p digital or an 8" CRT for under $1k makes them not very cost effective anymore.

Lumenlabs may be losing their attractiveness, but this system is timeless:
