    Sony KDF-60WF HD Problem ?!?!

I am in Mass and my cable provider (Charter) uses a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3250 HD. This box has HDMI out and my TV has DVI in - so trying to always get the best, I purchased a HDMI to DVI cable.

When I couple the two, and additional audio cables the cable box throws a message on the TV:

DVI Alert: Your HDTV does not support HDCP. Please use the YPrPb component connection to watch TV.

Charter is and was clueless. Has anyone had this type of problem or know how to get these devices to talk to each other?

    Thanks,
    Keith

Contact Sony so see if that set supports HDCP content protection

Many, MANY HDTV's do NOT support HDCP encryption- even many early DVI sets. Late DVI sets labelled HDCP compliant, and all HDMI sets support HDCP.

You'll probably need to get a new version of the SA box with component video outputs.

I have numerous friends with the same problem.

I have a little box that goes from HDCP DVI to RGBHV for my NEC projector, but there' s no equiavlent that I know of to go to component.

The TV does have an HDMI port which is supposed to be HDCP compliant

        Annoying....

The box is working currently with the component outputs - but I would prefer to use the HDMI input.

            Sony's Response

Sony's eSupport Knowledge Base; Knowledge Article C387911. This response was specific for my PFM-42X1/B HDTV:

<<Error: DVI ALERT. Your HDTV does not support HDCP. Use component connections.

This error message may display when a set-top box is connected to the television. The error message is being produced by the set-top box, not the television. Ensure your set-top box has been properly configured to output a DVI signal and that it is securely connected to the television. If the issue cannot be resolved, it will be necessary to contact the set-top box provider.>>

Of course I strongly suspect that when I twll the TWC, NYC, tech this he would never the less blame it on the TV.

            I have a Sony PFM-42X1/B with Video Inputs: 1)RGB/Component (HD-15); 2) DVI-D-HDCP; 3) Composite (BNC); 4) Y/C (S-Video).

The only one I get to work is the S-Video which only provides ED not HD.

I have tried a VESA (Component to VGA breakout cable) with no sync.

I have tried the HDMI to DVI with the message so many are getting: "Your HDTV does not support HDCP. PLease use your Component connections."

I am getting nowhere. I do have an appointment for a phone conversation with a Sony tech tomorrow and I have an appointment for TWC to see their Explorer 8300HD not working on Wednesday. I am also trying to get ahold of the salesperson who sold me the TV and told me to use the VESA cable.
Major frustration to have a good HD TV and only get an enhanced picture.

Not only does the HDMI to DVI problem bother me but so does the "no sync" message I get with the VESA breakout. If anyone can help me at least get some HD with the VESA I would be eternally greatful (well, almost).

              Hey,

I get the exact same error message verbatim. I've jumped through hoops for the sale guys, the cable company, and all sorts of customer service systems too. It's very frustrating. Did anyone have a clear solution for this problem?

I have a Toshiba 42HP83, bought the HDMI to DVI-D single link cable, upgraded to TWC's HD DVR, using the Scientific Atlanta HD8300 set top box.

The only thing I have to add to the thread for troubleshooting the problem is that I see the message even after I turn the set top box off which leads me to believe the TV is the unit that is throwing the error not the cable box. I also have no faith in TWC's abillity to solve this problem and SA's website doesn't have enough info to troubleshoot their product nor do they have a number to call to support cable co customers....

UPDATE: It was suggested on other forums this problem is related to the sequence in which you turn your system on. Their solution is to turn the set top box off first, then turn the HDTV off, then reconnect the HDMI-to-DVI cable, reboot the set top box, then power the HDTV on, and finally power the set top box back on. The solution has appeared to work for some people. Apparently turning the HDTV on first and then the set top box requires some sort of handshake that won't establish properly if your system is not turned on in that sequence. This make sense since the same instructions are noted in the HDTV installation manual.

Anyways, that didn't solve my problem...now I just get a black screen. Maybe some of the other boards are right when they say the SA HD8300 for TWC doesn't have the correct firmware version to support HDCP through the HDMI-to-DVI cable yet? But that seems odd...my version is 2.5 on this box...and my understanding is that HDMI is backward compatible so I still need help if you have it. Thanks.

BTW - Searching for the string "Your HDTV does not support HDCP" on google turns up 100's of links to message boards like this from folks all over the country. Interesting thing is...almost everyone who's complaining about this problem seems to be using the SA HD8000 or the SA HD8300 set top box.
